January 13, 2006 (*scroll down to read all 2006 Newspapers!)Monday night's performance by Broadway belters Ann Harada,Leah Hocking and Liz McCartney (pictured backstage, right) had Birdland jammed with fans, friends and co-workers, including Avenue Q's Barrett Foa, Jennifer Barnhart,Christian Anderson, Stephanie D'Abruzzo, Hairspray's Andrew Rannells, Joe Abraham, Bryan West, Ragtime composerStephen Flaherty, and Disney'sTom Moynahan. We even spied the hardest-working-man-in-showbusiness, arranger/conductor Stephen Oremus! The following Cast Party was, as always, fun, packed, hilarious and musically diverse!
Broadway at Birdland! We're so excited that Darius de Haas (pictured right), whomThe New York Times called "an astonishing vocal acrobat,” will make his Birdland concert debut on Monday, January 30at 7pm. He'll be performing a combination of material from his highly acclaimed Stevie Wonderand Billy Strayhorn-themedLincoln Center concerts, along with a few new originals. You probably know Darius from his Broadway performances in Rent,Carousel, Marie Christine, Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Gershwin's Fascinating Rhythm. He won the Obie Award for his performance inThe Running Man, and has been a soloist in concerts at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, London'sRoyal Festival Hall and LA'sDisney Concert Hall. Most recently, he has been singing on the road withVanessa Williams…and although we can't say who (hint, hint), expecta very special guest star joining Darius at Birdland! You better call212.581.3080 to make a reservation now!
This coming Monday, January 16th, our Cast Party Symphony Orchestrawill be led by pianist/composer/singer David Budway for the first time! You might have heard him accompanying Broadway diva Christiane Noll, or with jazzers Stanley Turrentine, Jeff 'Tain' Watts and Regina Carter. He was recently the proud recipient of two prizes in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition.so I'm sure we'll be able to coax him into giving us a sampling of his work! Happily, our favorite bass-man, Steve Doyle, will be on hand to show David the Cast Party ropes, and we'd love YOU to show up to welcome him to the family! Of course, Cast Party takes place every Monday night at Birdland, starting around 9:30/10pm, with the following exception: HEY! This coming Monday (that's January 16th), Cast Party will be starting EARLY, as in, 9:00ish. Perfect for those of you who have, like, something to DO on Tuesday morning. Cast Party Fave...Not to be self-aggrandizing, but we just had to remind you about our Cast Party Apparel. This slightly retro-in-style ringer t-shirt (modeled alluringly byMatthew Smith, right) is made from 100% Pre-Shrunk Cotton is available in S, M, L and XL. The Snowy White fabric combined with the Minnelli Red neck and sleeve treatment make for a bold fashion statement declaring your love for a certain Monday night spectacle. Click onwww.CastPartyNYC.com or purchase one at Birdland!
January 20, 2006Could it be crummier weather here in New York City? I mean, please. At least it could snow or something more attractive. I'm calling Sam Championimmediately. The inclement conditions couldn't keep a lot of really talented Cast Party-ers from showing up to their favorite Monday night haunt last week, though. The Cast Party Symphony Orchestra was made up of Steve Doyle on bass and newcomer David Budway at the keys (avec moi, above). Mr. Budway certainly fit right in, with his amazing pianistic talents, swinging singing, and hilarious musical comments. Manhattan dapper-dan John Wallowich was brilliant as always, Suedevisited all the way from Cape Cod, Natalie Joy Johnson gave us a preview of her Joe's Pub concert, and lots of regulars showed their stuff, musically-speaking. All in all, just another fantastic night!
January 27, 2006I can't begin to tell you how thrilled we were to see Claude McKnight and Patricia Moreno(pictured right) in the audience at Cast Party on Monday. Claude is one-sixth of the absolutely genius vocal group, Take 6, whom I've enjoyed in concert a half-dozen times. Patricia was the gorgeous on-air trainer when I was booking talent on the “Fox After Breakfast” talk show. One of the all-time great CP moments took place Monday when Claude stormed the stage to sing with David Budway and Steve Doyle. He even graced us with a virtual trombone solo. So cool. Speaking of trombones, the ultra-hip Todd Londagin showed up, sang, played an actual horn, and showed off his hoofing skills. Check out his most excellent site. Our fingers are crossed that he becomes a regular. Our great pals Emily Drennan (Hunka Burning Love), Scott Porter (Altar Boyz) and Rene Ruiz (Toxic Audio) sang some mean backup and beatbox for Natalie Douglas. Then the tables were turned and Emily took the lead. It was all too much fun.

The cheering throng included jazz great Andy Bey, Leslie Uggams and The Color Purple's Felicia Fields. We can't wait for the next time Darius de Haas is in da' house. March 3, 2006The Lascivious Biddies(pictured right) braved the cold and paid a visit to Cast Party on Monday night, much to the delight of the Birdland crowd. If you don't know these dazzling divas, you simply must click on their biddycast and hear what all the fuss is about. They brought down the house with their highly original songs, “Betty” and “Famous.” (LISTEN.) We were also blessed by the appearance of one rockin' cellist, Trevor Exter. You rarely hear the words 'rock' and 'cello' together, but he's created an amazing new sound that we're nuts about. The ever-elegant Charles Cochran flew in from Palm Beach for a shocking change of weather, and favored us with delectable medley of “Dancing on a Dime” and “Dream Dancing.” Charlie certainly leads the parade of chic supperclub entertainers, now that Bobby Short has joined the choir. Denise Lee's performance of “God Bless The Child” was a revelation, too. She sang her face off, and we hope she makes another trip from Dallas soon! Tedd Firth and Steve Doyle accompanied dozens of Cast Party regulars and quite a few newcomers…we can't wait for next week!

Deb Lew,Beth Bartley, Jason Robinson, Justin Hines, American Idol's Roy Harcourt, Hair's Dana Steer and Avenue Q's Barrett Foa all showed us why everyone wants to go to the famous summer theater school. (Why didn't I go there instead of The John Davidson Summer Camp?)
Regular Cast Party-ers like Natalie Douglas, Garth Kravits, Erich Bergen, and just-back-from-Japan Rene Ruiz were also present to cheer The Return Of Kate Botello, our warbling web wonderwoman. Even though she works on the website and this newsletter from afar on a weekly basis, oh, how we've missed her face! Broadway at Birdland! This coming Monday, March 13, we're thrilled that brilliant singer/songwriter Janis Ian will be joining us at Cast Party to celebrate her new cd (“Folk Is The New Blackâ€), a successful tour, and her upcoming Joe's Pub gig! It's sure to be one of those “Where you there when…?†moments, so get to Birdland early to get a good seat! I have it on good authority that she'll honor us with a few songs, including her ground-breaking “At Seventeen.

March 17, 2006First of all, if you'd like to read a thrilling and incisive interview with noneother than ME, click onwww.actorslife.com. Now…on to business. Monday night was aMonster Cast Party, showcasing some of the most thrilling talent we've seen in a long time, and that's saying a lot. First of all,Janis Ian's (in the picture atright) performances of “Jesse,” “At Seventeen” and “My Autobiography” started the evening like twenty sticks of dynamite! A cheering throng that included Michael Feinstein, Rex Reed, Mark Hudson and Linda Lavin, couldn't believe their luck to be able to hear this legend in such an intimate and casual setting. The New York Times was there to record the entire event, so watch for that. Many thanks to the constantly supportive and gracious Christine Lavin for suggesting Cast Party as the spot for Janis to hang during her stay in town! Christine favored us with a hilarious song she wrote 20 years ago that actually mentions Janis, which was terribly appropriate! Brian Charles Rooney, who is in rehearsals forThreepenny Opera (as Lucy Brown!) sang his lungs out, Lodi Carr was “Old Fashioned,” David Ippolito asked us to “Get Outta The House,”Carol Shaw sang about “My Romance,” Lawrence O'Keefe sang his “Sensitive Song,” The Lascivious Biddies sang about “Carol,” and then, songwriters Gary Burr and Victoria Shaw were “Ready To Say Goodnight.” There were loads of newcomers and so many beloved regulars…I wish I could list them all! But they'll all be back soon, we hope!Tedd Firth and Steve Doyle worked overtime as the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra, and we couldn't have had more fun.
Tuesday night, the aforementioned Victoria Shaw went Under The Coversagain, joined onstage by bazillion-selling songwriters Gary Burr, Mark Hudson and Billy Mann. From Garth to Pink to Jessica to Cher, these four geniuses have written the songs that make the whole world sing.but to hear the stories behind the tunes and to hear them with just piano and guitar is the best gift. They'll be back in July and I can't wait. Broadway at Birland!JIM BRICKMAN! How lucky are we? He usually performs in big, huge concert venues, but we persuaded him to do two very special, intimate concerts at Birdland this coming Monday and Tuesday, March 20 and 21at 7pm. He's bringing with him two Broadway singers or great note: Stephanie J. Block andMike Eldred. Of course you know Stephanie from her Broadway debut as Liza Minnelliopposite Hugh Jackman in The Boy From Oz and as Elphaba in the National Tour of Wicked. Mike was in the final cast of the Broadway company of Les Miserable, and sings with symphonies all over the world. Mr. Brickman (up there, in the pic), a platinum-selling pianist and composer, has already established himself as America's most popular romantic pianist with the enormous success of compositions like “Valentine,” “The Gift,” “Love of My Life,” “Simple Things” and “Peace.” Call Birdland and get a seat for these concerts NOW! That's a big ol' run-on sentence, but YOU try to list all those people in YOUR newsletter (I just did, and now I'm tired. --ed.)! Billy Stritch (back from Paris with Liza) and Steve Doyle (back from Midtown) made up the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra, and were pretty brilliant if you ask me. Karaoke my Aunt Fanny. Like ABC-TV said, it's "extreme open-mic." We love that. She's back with me on Cast Party - The Radio Show, to discuss the release, the memories, and where all that star quality comes from!

In the words of Liza herself, "Cast Party IS New York!" Cast Party Radio Show is produced by Brian Wilson at SoHa Media. April 7, 2006My plans to enjoy a dazzling Monday night went extremely south with the advent of the most unpleasant influenza. Happily, Christine Pedi's show was a resounding success, what with folks like Margaret “Queen of the American Songbook” Whiting in the house enjoying the hilarity. Brava La Pedi! Later on, David Ippolito, Billy Stritch and Steve Doyle kicked major open-mic tuchas and hosted Cast Party with aplomb. They even pulled a Larry King and interviewed me by phone from my deathbed. I'm sure the audience, which included Broadway's Brent Barrett and “Trading Spaces” Demon Douglas Wilson, all enjoyed hearing me wheeze and hack out my haunting Cher impression. Anything for a laugh, clearly! I was able to become vertical the next night for Jason Robert Brown's extravaganza, which jammed Birdlandwith family, friends and showfolk like Justin Bohon, Kerry Butler, Julie Garnye, Brian Nash, Mark Hartman and superstar arranger Don Sebesky. Check the picture above to see Jason with fans from the Manhattan School of Music, or click on BroadwayWorld.com to see Craig Brockman's wonderful photos of the evening. It was great to see and hear the amazingJenn Colella guesting with Jason. She's just back from California where she knocked 'em dead in The Times They Are A-Changin', which is coming to the Great White next season!

These ain't any old tired chorus boys, mind you. Simply Barbra insisted on the best! Jersey Boys' Daniel Reichard, Light in the Piazza's David Burnham and Grey Gardens' Matt Cavennaugh will be singing, swinging and flinging Babs into a state of buttah all night, and you SIMPLY must be there! Call Birdland, dontcha know? 212.581.3080. May 12, 2006Lots of Broadway movers and shakers were on hand Monday night cheering the debut of Dick Scanlan's incredible one-man-show! If they were expecting another "and then I wrote..." cabaret act, they were pleasantly surprised when Dick took to the stage and told stories for 90 minutes! And what stories! The piece is funny, smart, touching and life-affirming, and folks like Sutton Foster, Edward Hibbert, Jeanine Tessori, David Drake and Michael Mayer were all standing and stomping for more. Congrats to Mr. Scanlan! Later, Cast Partywas equally jammed with an abundance of great and varied talent! Michael Feinstein and Lodi Carr (above, photo by Mark Rupp) talked music,JoAnna James sang Aretha with the Cast Party Tabernacle Choir,Grammy-winner and Ring Of Fire star Lari White jazzed it up with Billy andSteve, while costumer-to-superstars Nolan Miller surveyed the scene!
I was also thrilled to finally meet the other Jim Caruso! I've seen his name on CDs for years, since he's produced everyone from Madonna to C&C Music Factory to the cast of Rent!...definitely the hipper JC! (You're at least as hip as the other-other Jim Caruso, though. --ed.) All in all, just another Monday at Birdland, the best music room in the country! Is it any wonder ABC-TV called Cast Party “Extreme Open Mic?” Broadway at Birdland!Euan Morton (right, photo byJoan Marcus) is coming to Birdland! This coming Monday, May 15, the Tony-nominated star of Taboo sings reinterpreted Broadway standards and splashy songs from his brand new album,NewClear. He also let me in on a little secret...he's going to sing some songs recorded by his beloved Karen Carpenter! The show is almost sold-out, but if you call the box office (212.581.3080) or click on InstantSeats.com/Birdland now, you just might snap up the last seat! It's going to be a rocking evening and we don't want you to miss it! There's a $30 cover and $10 food/drink minimum…so come eat, drink, and be dazzled! Stick around for Cast Party after the show.
Tedd Firth and Steve Doyle will be swinging at the piano and bass, I will be annoying on the mic, and rumor has it that the cast of Ring Of Firewill be there to celebrate their Broadway run before everyone scatters to the showbiz winds. Coming up on Monday, May 22, we celebrate the PS Classics release of "Jule Styne in Hollywood," a recording of both standards and forgotten gems from Styne's illustrious film catalog. Performers from the recording who will be singing in the Birdland concert include Maria Friedman, Leslie Uggams, Norm Lewis, Jeff Harnar, Eric Comstock, Johnny Rodgers, Klea Blackhurst, Sara Zahn and The Lascivious Biddies (cast subject to change, of course). The fabulous cast will sing Styne standards like "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend," "Some People," "It's Been A Long, Long Time,” “I'll Walk Alone," "You Make Me Dream Too Much" and "Put 'em In A Box, Tie 'em With A Ribbon," among many others. Call Birdland now! May 26, 2006First of all, yes, there is a Cast Party this coming week! Don't think the Memorial Day weekend can stop us...come celebrate the onset of summer at Birdland!!
Last Monday's tribute to Jule Styne's Hollywood was a sparkling success, with a cast that included Billy Stritch, Maria Friedman, Peter Johns (in our glamorousDouglas Wilson-designed dressing room, right), Johnny Rodgers Band,Klea Blackhurst, David Beach, Jeff Harnar, Tedd Firth, Fred Barton,Elizabeth Stanley, Karen Murphy, and The Lascivious Biddies. Many thanks to Aaron Gandy for hosting, playing and making showbiz happen! The following Cast Party was a veritable cornucopia of musical styles. Superstar pianist Jim Brickman sang and played one of his chart-toppers,Grammy-winner Lari White wailed some Aretha, Colleen McHugh got screams with a hilarious Al Yankovich tune, Todd Londagin crooned, tromboned and tapped, Terese Genecco belted some Francis Faye, and J. Walter Hawkes actually made the ukelele hip. Our pal Eric Millegan (from TV's "Bones") warbled, Jon Bozeman sang a way-cool original, Vincent Wolfe sang 'n swang, Dave Berg showed why his songs have gone to #1 on the charts, Mark Aaron James sang his heart out, and Erich Bergen asked the musical question, "I'm Not A Girl" (perhaps our first Britney Spearscover). Billy Stritch and Steve Doyle, The Cast Party Symphony Orchestra, outdid themselves. As always. And we'll all be there next week! Summer in the City/Broadway at Birdland!I'm thrilled to tell you about the "Summer In The City" concert series that I'm presenting withTheaterMania.com! June 2, 2006The stifling Memorial Day heat couldn't keep a few hundred music-lovers from Birdland on Monday night! We even had a surprise visit from my old palMichael Orland (in the center, right, with Eric Strong and me, with thanks to photog Mark Rupp). Michael happens to be the pianist/arranger/musical director for "American Idol," and was in town to do "Regis & Kelly" with the top 4 Idol kids, including soon-to-be-superstar Taylor Hicks. His presence caused quite a bit of excitement and many full-out performances. After hearing that the age cut-off for “Idol” contestants is 29, I calmed down a bit, but my mother, who played a medley of her hits, is still holding onto the dream.
For three years, I wrote a column for TheaterMania.com called "Jim Caruso is...PRYING!," in which I asked hundreds of witty and smart show folks a slew of questions. I'm happy to announce that the column is returning...but this time, with a techo spin! "PRYING!" will now be a monthly video podcast available on TheaterMania and in this newsletter. Within the next few weeks, you'll also be able to subscribe to the show so it can be delivered right to your computer! Our premiere work of art goes up today, so check it out! You'll see me at the recent Drama Desk Awardsspeaking with folks about their all-time favorite audience moment...and you might be surprised at the answers I got! (Many thanks to Erich Bergen, video producer and camera man extraordinaire!) Broadway at Birdland! This coming Monday, June 5, the talented cast of Broadway'sThe Light In The Piazza show their "lighter" side one last time before they end their successful run and scatter to the showbiz winds. It will be an evening of fun, frivolity and fabulous singing starring David Burnham, Patti Cohenour,Aaron Lazar, Laura Griffith,Jennifer Hughes, Felicity LaFortune, to name just a few.Andrew Byrne will serve as musical director, and the event will be hosted and directed byDavid Bonanno. Special surprise guests are also expected. You better callBirdland now for tickets! (212.581.3080)
While I'm in the Mediterranean being all-at-sea, Cast Party will be in the very capable hosting hands of Christine Pedi (pictured above)! If you don't know her, you have no idea what you're missing! She's famous for her long association with Forbidden Broadway, and her brilliant impressions and comedy have earned her a Drama Desk nomination and an LA Ovation Award. She made her Broadway debut in Rob Marshall's revival of Little Me, and can be heard daily on Sirius Satellite Radio's "Broadway's Best"station, playing showtunes and interviewing theatre legends. "Sopranos"fans may recognize Christine as the dearly departed Mrs. Bobby Baccala...it was a brief but pivotal role - he loved her so much he couldn't bear to defrost her ziti! Tedd Firth and Steve Doyle - on piano and bass - will be on hand to keep the evening swinging, so you know it will be a fun night! June 23, 2006A few folks called it the 'Best Cast Party Ever,' but how would you start to compare? My return to the Big (baked) Apple turned into quite a celebration on Monday night, what with a beautiful early show byDavid Burnham (with extremely special guest Stephanie J. Block), followed by a majorly kickass Cast Party. It all started when Liza Minnelli sauntered onto the stage, ready to take no prisoners! After she modeled some Greek headwear I brought back from my Mediterranean expedition, she asked Maestro Billy Stritch and I to join her on a rousing performance of Kay Thompson's "I Love A Violin," (left, thanks to Mark Rupp). You don't hear or see that everyday, folks, and the crowd went ballistic. That gal knows how to perform. She should do well in the business. Liza wasn't the only one making the scene that night, of course. We were also thrilled by performances from Natalie Douglas, Brian DeLorenzo, Colleen McHugh, Tony DeSare, Hilary Kole, Trevor Exter,Bob Dolphin, Lodi Carr, and an amazing duet by Lari White and Steve Doyle! We also got a surprise visit from Jimmy Norman, who was lead singer of The Coasters. He also wrote the R&B classic "Time Is On My Side" for Irma Thomas, which was later made into a gigantic hit by the Rolling Stones. Thanks to guitar virtuoso Sean Harkness for bringing Jimmy to the party! Tipping The Velvet, an awesome female vocal trio, gave us a preview of what they'll be doing on the upcoming Rosie cruise, and Miss Julie Garnyé came by after her show-stopping performance in Broadway By The Yearat Town Hall. Julie is off to Australia for a while, and OY will we miss her. Cast Party just won't be the same without JG Defying Gravity. She's a New York kinda gal, though, so we expect to see her back soon! Next week's Cast Party should be fabulous, with David Budway and Steve Doyle on piano and bass! Come see what all the fuss is about!
Broadway at Birdland! That purdy girl to the left (in a photo by Bill Westmoreland) isStephanie J. Block, who happens to be in concert at Birdland this coming Monday and Tuesday nights at 7pm. Monday has been sold-out since January, but there are still a few seats available for Tuesday's "Block Party!" You might know Steph from her Broadway performance as Liza (see above) in The Boy From Oz, or asElphaba, the mean, green belting machine in the National Tour ofWicked. She's currently in rehearsals and sword-fighting school for her starring role in The Pirate Queen, where she will play The Pirate Queen herself, Grania O'Malley. The show, written by Boublil and Schonberg (Les Miserables and Miss Saigon), begins its pre-Broadway run in Chicago on October 3. Come see Stephanie, accompanied by Billy Stritch, in her one-woman-show, and send her off in style!! By the way, the wonderful Linda Lavin is bringing "Songs and Confessions of a Former Waitress" to Birdland at 7pm on Monday, July 3...call the club now for reservations! 212.581.3080
June 30, 2006We broke all attendance records this week at Birdland. Half of America flew into Manhattan to partake of Stephanie J. Block'sBlock Party on Monday and Tuesday. Her legion of fans, “The BlockHeads,” packed the room, along with family, friends and ex-castmates from Boy From Oz and Wicked. I couldn't have been prouder of Steph, who, along with Billy Stritch (piano), Steve Doyle(bass), Tony Tedesco (drums) and Todd Londagin (trombone) brought us the slickest act this side of The Emerald City. After the shows, she greeted everyone out on 44th Street for an hour-and-a-half! That's our glamour girl (left) fluffing up before the concert…and you can see more pix on BroadwayWorld.com, with many thanks toGenevieve Refter Keddy. The following Cast Party on Monday was a smash, too. How could it not be great with all that magic in the air!David Budway and Steve Doyle (on piano and bass) really helped keep the mojo flowing until the wee hours!
The Roast/Toast/Tribute to…um…me…was certainly one of the most thrilling nights of my young life! (Check out the pix on Flickr and Patrick McMullan, thanks to Mark Rupp and Chance.) I could never thank Caroline Montgomery enough for the care and love she put into the show, and the cast, as I said, was an Embarassment of Bitches. I mean please! When else will you see Linda Lavin, Julie Halston, Hilary Kole, Karen Mason, Todd Londagin, Sally Mayes,Stephanie Block, Julie Reyburn, Karen Mack, Klea Blackhurst, Amanda Green, Michael Estwanik, Marnie Baumer, and Miles Phillips all extolling my lack of virtues on a stage? Many gigantic thanks to the owners and staff at The Metropolitan Room for making it a beautiful evening…and to Billy Stritch for the musical perfection. Read more details on Talkin' Broadway. Thanks, The Siegels! Broadway at Birdland!I don't have to tell you that I'm the biggest Linda Lavin fan in the world, do I? She is a fabulous singer and musician, a brilliant actress, and tells the best showbiz stories in the world. And she's really good looking. (Look at the gorgeous Bill Westmoreland photo to the left if you want proof.) Anyway, I'm thrilled that she's spending her Monday, July 3 with us in concert at Birdland. In, Songs And Confessions Of A Former Waitress, Linda recalls her roots in the theater (originatingSondheim's "The Boy From..." in The Mad Show) and her early cabaret trials and tribulations in some less-than-glamorous boites. Her varied musical choices range from Gershwin to Maltby & Shire;Dave Frishberg to Trisha Yearwood, and the musical relationship with pal Billy Stritch at the piano only adds to the party atmosphere this hostess-with-the-mostess exudes. There will be a $35 cover plus $10 food/drink minimum, and you can make reservations by calling212.581.3080 or visiting www.instantseats.com/birdland. Following Linda's 7pm show will be our Independence Day Cast Party withTedd Firth at the piano and Steve Doyle on bass. Wear red, white and blue. You know you want to, and it's really the only day it doesn't look scary.
July 7, 2006I truly thought last Monday, July 3 was going to be a relatively quiet night at Birdland... but boy was I mistaken. The fireworks started early withLinda Lavin's brilliant "Songs and Confessions of a Former Waitress." That's Linda (left) with theater glitterati Eileen Atkins,Edward Hibbert, Penny Fuller and pal James peeking through! Ms. L is at once warm, charming, witty and fall-down funny when she speaks of her past cabaret years, her "Alice" memories and the Gypsy experience.Billy Stritch at the piano, David Finck on bass and hubby Steve Bakunas on drums formed a swanky-looking and dazzling-sounding musical trio for Linda, who showed off her jazz chops for over an hour. After her years in all the 'downstairs' clubs, we're thrilled that she's come up to street level and makes Birdland her musical home. She's invited back ANY time! They all stuck around for Cast Party, which was packed to the rafters with summer-in-the-city-dwellers and visitors. When the afore-mentioned Linda Lavin volunteered to pinch-hit a vocalese for bass-player Steve Doyle, we had some trouble deciding which song to sing. Enter Liza Minnelli, who volunteered "Slap That Bass!" It was one of the best CPM's (Cast Party Moments) in recent memory. We were also happy to see Lisa Mordente, who's back in New York and destined to be a CP regular! The return of Alexandra Haas to the Birdland stage was trés French and trés fabulou. All in all, another great night!
Check out the latest video episode of Jim Caruso is...Prying! over at TheaterMania.com. I do get to talk with the best people, don't I? Broadway at Birdland!Under the Covers is always one of my all-time favorite events we do at Birdland. If you really know me, you know about my insane love for country music. To bring in the composers of some of those amazing musical stories is always a thrill. So we are, once again, bringing you the best this coming Monday, July 10 at 7pm. Victoria Shaw (left) is a pop/country songwriter responsible for over 65 million CD sales! As a singer, she had the great opportunity to open forGarth Brooks in the historic 1997 Central Park concert. Victoria also wrote one of Garth's biggest hits of all-time, "The River." The two-time Emmy Award-winning composer also wrote "I Love The Way You Love Me" for John Michael Montgomery and "Nobody Wants To Be Lonely" for Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera. Her songs have been recorded by Olivia Newton John, Boyzone, Faith Hill,LeAnn Rimes, Reba McEntyre, Tricia Yearwood, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Michael McDonald. Joining Victoria in this very special evening will be Grammy-winning composer/singer Lari White, who recently starred in the Broadway production of Ring Of Fire, and her husbandChuck Cannon, who has written #1 hits with/for Toby Keith,Wynonna and John Michael Montgomery. Come hear the stories behind the hits! There will be a $25 cover and a $10 food/drink minimum. Call Birdland for reservations 212.581.3080 or log ontowww.instantseats.com/birdland. Stick around after the show for another installment of Cast Party, with Billy Stritch and Steve Doyle making up the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra!
Don't forget that our very own Lodi "Ladybird" Carr will be in concert at Birdland on July 11 at 5:30. You won't want to miss this awesome jazz interpreter who sang regularly with hard boppers like Hank Mobley, Duke Jordan, and Art Blakey. Village Voice critic Nat Hentoff notes that Lodi "illuminates a song musically, from the inside," and we couldn't agree more! July 14, 2006Howdy all you cowpokes and cowpoketresses! This past Monday'sUnder The Covers with Victoria Shaw, Lari White and Chuck Cannon was a country/pop music lover's dream! These three brilliant composer/performers showed a packed Birdland just why they have shelves full of Grammys, Emmys, Songs of the Year, and Number One Records. They all stuck around after the show for Cast Party, where Lari sang with our own Steve Doyle (see photo by Mark Rupp, left), and Victoria played for her two gorgeous and talented daughters,Ruby and Ava. Grey Gardens' Bob Stillman sang two originals, Kim Key and Tabitha Fair wailed some Aretha, Eve Silber and Todd Londagin duetted on guitar and trombone, Jill Anderson was a ukelele lady, and newcomer Nice Peter ended the evening with the dirtiest, foulest, funniest tune we've ever heard! No lie, Cast Party is THE most eclectic hodgepodge of fantastic entertainment on the scene, but you probably knew that. The audience was filled with swells, too, like the really, really funny Judy Gold, the really, really talented Jarrod Emick and Entertainment Weekly's fave chanteuse, Maude Maggart.
Broadway at Birdland! This Monday, July 17th, the absolutely spectacular Lucie Arnaz (left) is spending her night off from starring in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on Broadway...with US! It also happens to be her birthday, and I'm so thrilled we'll be helping her celebrate with a surprise-guest-star-filled show. She and her musical director, Ron Able, have put together a show that will include beloved standards, some new tunes, original material, and a few Latin songs close to Lucie's heart! The 7pm show has been sold out for about a week, but I suggest coming to the club early (around 5pm) to snag a seat at the bar. Following Ms. A. will beCast Party, starring Billy Stritch and Steve Doyle as The Cast Party Symphony Orchestra.
Our Cast Party jazzbird, Hilary Kole, has been kicking jazz tuchas all over the globe lately, and I'm thrilled to tell you that she's performing a whole week at Birdland! And do I have a deal for you, gentle Cast Party Newsletter Reader! If you go see her show, “The Haunted Heart” on July 18, 19 or 20 and mention this offer, Birdland will waive your music charge! That's right. No cover. Hilary has shows at 9pm and 11pm, and I can't wait to hear her with the all-star band led by the extraordinary Alan Broadbent at the piano. Let's all meet there and cheer for one of the best singers in town! Go Hil! July 28, 2006Patrick DeGennaro's Burt Bacharach show on Monday hadBirdland hopping! The place was packed, the music was brilliant, and Patrick has never sounded better. I sometimes forget that Burt wrote some really groovy tunes like “What's New Pussycat?,” which Patrick sang in his best Tom Jones hip-swinging manner. Afterwards, we were all gobsmacked at how many first-time performers showed up for Cast Party. Of course, there were some beloved regulars, like the totally glammed-out Hilary Kole (left), who packed 'em in during her run last week. The girl can sing. The New York Times said so! I was also happy to see the way cool Lascivious Biddies, who will be in concert at Birdland on September 18! Legendary Oscar-winning superstar Celeste Holm and her husband, Frank Basile, stopped in, and Frank favored us with a tune.
So did Malan Breton from TV's “Project Runway.” Hilarious. Do I even need to say you never know WHO will show up at Cast Party?! (Check out FLICKR for proof!) The music went on until 1:30am, with spectacular help from Tedd Firthand Steve Doyle on piano and bass. Broadway at Birdland! They're ba-a-ack! Toxic Audio (left), the best acapella goup on the planet, will be in concert at Birdland on Monday, August 7th at 7pm. Thanks to their Off-Broadway run, a Drama Desk Award, and a 2005 Artist of the Year honor by the CARA Awards, Toxic Audio has definitely made their mark on the New York scene. Since they were on our stage last year, they've performed all over the world, including a Japanese tour, a smash run in Las Vegas, at Shea Stadium, and forRobert De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival. The five vocalists in Toxic Audio use no instruments other than the human voice to create complex sonic textures, rhythmic drumbeats, thumping bass lines and searing guitar-like solos in their performance of contemporary pop songs, timeless classics, jazz-scat and vocally-orchestrated original compositions. You have to hear them to believe them... so call212.581.3080 or click on www.instantseats.com/birdland now to reserve! Coming soon to our Summer In The City concert series: Broadway's Nancy Anderson (August 14), diva Natalie Douglas (August 21) and the fabulous Marcy & Zina Show (August 28)!
A big shout-out to the cast and creators of [title of show], one of the most hilarious, touching pieces of theater I've seen in eons. Jeff Bowen, Hunter Bell, Heidi Blickenstaff, Susan Blackwell, Larry Pressgrove and Michael Berresse have put together a musical about putting together a musical. You have to see it! Run. Now. Really. Go. August 4, 2006It's been scorching here in New York City, but that didn't stop some of the most talented people on the planet from singing their hearts out at Cast Party on Monday night! We were so happy to see Meredith Patterson, who was so great as Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street on Broadway. She and Billy (left, photo by Mark Rupp) reminisced about their time in the show together, then sang “About A Quarter To Three.” So cute. Our favorite folkie Christine Lavin sang a hilarious song about her own demise. Everyone discussed their most embarrassing moment onstage, with Jacqueline Hester winning the grand prize (the Sweeney Todd CD!). There were standards and show tunes and pop songs and tap dancing and cellos and guitars and bad jokes. You know... Cast Party. And we'll do it all again next Monday night, with Billy Stritch and Steve Doyle toiling as the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra.
You can click on New York Cool and Playbill to read all about the amazing time we had at Lucie's Birthday Bash at Birdland a few weeks ago...and there are tons of brand new photos on FLICKR! Go. August 18, 2006Monday night's Marcy & Zina Show was one of their all-time best, thanks to their brilliantly clever original material, kick-ass band, packed room, and the extra-special vocals of Kate Weatherhead andScott Coulter. It was M&Z's 4th gig at Birdland, and we're so jazzed that they call our place home! We can't wait for their return! The following Cast Party was jammed with even more fun folks that usual. I was most thrilled to see Bob Martin (left, in a photo by Mark Rupp), the brilliant star and Tony-winning author of The Drowsy Chaperone, with his wife, Janet Van De Graaff. Our mutual pal, Michael Feinstein, told him about the Party, so he came and stayed until closing! And why wouldn't he, with talent like swingin' David Budwayat the piano, Mike Ockburn warbling 25 Rodgers & Hammerstein tunes in 3 minutes, Kassira wailing the blues, Jamie Metzl serving up some Gilbert & Sullivan, and David Friedman playing original country for Max von Essen and Jenny Powers?! Varied? I would venture to say so. We also spied the afore-mentioned Mr. Feinstein lurking in a corner with designer-to-the-superstars Nolan Miller. You simply have to click on FLICKR to see all the faces! Cast Party is really the most shockingly bizarre and musically diverse evening on the planet. Come visit soon!
YES -- there will be a Cast Party this coming Monday! Tedd Firth and Steve Doyle, as the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra, will be laboring away...and we hope to see YOU! September 8, 2006The Labor Day Cast Party found Tedd Firth, Steve Doyle and I laboring away with a bevy of talented folks on the Birdland stage! We heard one of the best pieces of special material ever by Kevin Ray, the cast of Oedipus For Kids entertained and disturbed us, Birdland Songbird Robin Lee warbled a swell standard, Mark Aaron Jameskicked rock 'n roll tuchas, Bob Dolphin was hilarious, Hilary Kolemade magic...you know...the usual! I was lucky enough to receive a mini-didgeridoo (left, photo by Mark Rupp) from the always funnyJanis and Bill Corsair, and serenaded everyone with the rudest sounds this side of a bus station restroom. Please click on Cast Party - a photoset on Flickr to see more pix from the night...and many other nights at Cast Party! Next week, after Jason Robert Brown's concert (see below), stick around for a Very Special Cast Party with Billy-Bob Stritch and Steve-Bob Doyle on pianny and bass. We'll be celebrating Dallas pal Wendy Welch's birthday with lots of Texas Talent. Yee haw! Sing something country. Or not.
If you were wondering how I spent my time before inflicting Cast Party on the general public, you can check out WISEGUYS! If nothing else, you will marvel at the many interesting fashion choices and coiffures (I think the sailor stripes and 80's Robert Downey Jr. hair are particularly fabulous!-- ed). Broadway at Birdland!Last week, I told you about the upcoming Jason Robert Brownconcert on 9/11, and you responded like crazy! The night is sold out, and we can't wait to hear Jason, The Caucasian Rhythm Kings, and special guests Alice Ripley and Kate McGarry. What I didn't tell you about was the upcoming TUESDAY, September 12 performance of the spectacularly spiffy Todd Londagin and His Big Band! Todd, his 17-pieces and vocalist Toby Williams will be swinging Birdland with two shows at 9 and 11pm. If you haven't seen or heard Todd before, you have to come! He grew up in a family jazz band playing trombone, singing and tapdancing for tips on the streets of the world. A busker comes to Birdland! Through all that, he became a pop vocalist with a jazz sensibility and deep understanding of the essence of popular songwriting from the 30's through the 50's. Todd's sound has matured thanks to his 15 years as co-founder of the Flying Neutrinos, and 8 years as band leader for the most prestigious event planners. Click on www.ToddLondagin.com to see a great site about a fantastic entertainer! And call Birdland now...212.581.3080 to make a reservation. If you come to the 9pm show…we happily invite you to stick around for the late show gratis! That's foreign for FREE!
September 15, 2006Yee haw! It was a veritable hootenanny at Birdland on Monday night! After the sold-out Jason Robert Brown/Alice Ripley/Kate McGarryconcert, Cast Party fans stormed the place. Dallas diva Wendy Welch brought a slew of pals from the Lone Star State to help celebrate her birthday in style, and dozens of them serenaded her, along with Billy Stritch and Steve Doyle on piano and bass. It was great to see folks from my old stomping grounds...talented folks likeWillie Welch, Lois Leftwich, Michael Justis, Liz Reddick, Julie Anne Malone, Peggy Honea, Kassira, Steve Scarpetti, Donna Bullock, Micael Tina Turner Cline, and Connie Coit. That's all of us Texans in the photo on the left, with many thanks to photographerMark Rupp! Lots of other performers got into the act, including folk-star Christine Lavin, stride piano demon Jon Weber and...my mother. Check out many more pics of the evening onFlickr! The following night, Todd Londagin and His Big Band did us all proud by jamming the club for his Birdland debut! The place was boppin' and fingers were poppin' along with one of the best bands in the country! We can't wait for their return!
Broadway at Birdland! You have to come see The Lascivious Biddies (left, in a photo byGeoff Smith) this coming Monday, September 18 at 7pm! This all-female cocktail pop quartet has been making headlines for having an energetic and tightly woven live show, full of humor, expert musicianship and a dash of sentimentality. Blending jazz, pop and cabaret with four part harmonies, they have carried their fresh, genre-defying sound all the way from Kennedy Center to a segment on theCBS Evening News. They've become Cast Party faves, and we know you'll want to call the club now for reservations! (212.581.3080)
Of course, Cast Party will follow, with Billy Stritch and Wayne Batchelor making up the Symphony Orchestra! The following night, Tuesday, September 19, we have two shows that are so special, we can barely contain ourselves! At 8pm, The Nashville Connection - Broadway Meets Country (left, in a photo byRandy Lawson) do-si-do's onto the Birdland stage. Grammy Award winner Marcus Hummon (“Bless The Broken Road,” “Cowboy Take Me Away”) joins country star Sherrie Austin, and a plethora of theatre stars for an amazing night of music. First presented at theO'Neil Theatre Center, the evening is directed by Michael Bush. The Nashville Connection also features Erich Bergen, Cole Burden,Deven May (Bat Boy: The Musical), Brian Charles Rooney (Three Penny Opera), Nancy Slusser, and Louis Tucci (Buddy). The members of the show are also featured in Marcus Hummon's new musical Warrior, an upcoming 2006 New York Musical Theatre Festival production. As if that weren't a big enough Tuesday, we're following with Once Before We Go with Erich Bergen & Deven May at 10pm. Having recently been cast in an upcoming national tour, Erich Bergen and Deven May decided on one last Manhattan hurrah before seeing the country. Once Before We Go is a one-night variety show that will feature pop and theater music, plus a glimpse into Erich and Deven's off-the-wall imaginations. Again, call the club at 212.581.3080.
September 22, 2006What a week! Since last I wrote this extremely personal message to only you, we've had three musical extravaganzas and one Cast Partyat Birdland. Monday's early show featured the adorable Lascivious Biddies, whom you can see at left, buffing, fluffing and puffing in our glamorous dressing room designed by Trading Spaces' Douglas Wilson. Cast Party followed, and it was a cabaret diva-filled evening with Baby Jane Dexter, Barbara Brussell, Valentine Ryder, Jenna Esposito, Sue Matsuki, Natalie Nadon, Paul Dyke, Maude Maggartand no less that the King of the Supper Club Set, Michael Feinstein. Lots of NYMF performers were in the house, too, like the casts of The Children and This Could Be Love.
We're always happy to help promote great local theater, that's for sure! Click on Flickr to see a bajillion new photos of the fun. The Tuesday night early show was The Nashville Connection, with the cast of The Warrior, another NYMF production. It's composer,Marcus Hummon, just happens to be a Grammy-winner for last year's #1 song, “Bless The Broken Road,” recorded by Rascall Flatts. He and the cast sang lots more of his super-hits, along with some great old country standards. The crowd went wild, and I was in hog-heaven with all that great pickin' and grinnin'. Following that show was Once Before We Go, starring Erich Bergen and Deven May(left), which was an insane romp through bad taste and good music! We had a ball watching them cavort onstage before they zip off to do the National Tour of an un-named Broadway hit. (Time Out New Yorkhinted that the show's title might rhyme with “Schmerzy Goys,” but I'm not saying a thing.) Again, Flickr has more pix!
Oh, and by the by - thanks to the Siegels for saying such nice things about us (and true! 'Specially the "brilliant" part. --ed). Click here to see for yourself. September 29, 2006Were you at Cast Party on Monday night? Well, you shoulda been, if you weren't! The amazing Christine Lavin (left, photo by Mark Rupp), who is known far and wide as the Mother Teresa of folk music, absolutely killed. We're so proud that she's a regular! There were dozens of regulars in the house, as a matter of fact, includingToxic Audio's Rene Ruiz, Scott Coulter, Erich Bergen and LA's own Julie Garnyé (below left). Michael Winther, David Raleigh andApollo-winner Chris DeCristo all sang their heads off. SongwriterGrant Mitchell Hunter, along with singers Janet Glassford andJordana Jackson came all the way from Canada to serenade us, along with Tracy Stark at the piano. “Project Runway” designerMalan Breton was “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.”
My high school prom date, Taffy McCarthy, sang the blues. (One thing had nothing to do with the other, mind you.) The entire scene was watched over by our favorite Oscar and Tony-winning composer, Stephen Schwartz...and not one person sang “Defying Gravity” from his mega-hit, Wicked. Billy Stritch and Steve Doyle composed theSymphony Orchestra, to the delight of the hoardes. It was a great night…and we'll do it all over again next week, withTedd Firth and Wayne Batchelor on piano and bass! Broadway at Birdland! On Monday, October 2 at 7pm, I'm truly thrilled to present The Music of Deborah Abramson at Birdland! Deborah (pictured left), a frequent Broadway Musical Director (most recently Bernarda Alba), steps away from the piano and gives the stage to 2006 Tony nominees Manoel Felciano (Sweeney Todd) and Megan Lawrence(The Pajama Game), Sally Wilfert (Assassins, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer), Michael Winther (Drama Desk Nominee for Songs From An Unmade Bed), Charlie Brady (Les Miserables and Mamma Mia! tours) and special guest Theresa McCarthy (Floyd Collins,Titanic). The concert pairs Deborah's music with lyrics by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin (Tony-winning lyricist and book-writer for…Spelling Bee), Peter Mills, Amanda Yesnowitz, and Nathan Tysen. Musical Director is Marco Paguia. Deborah is a graduate of the NYU Musical Theatre Program, and her composing credits include Travels With My Discontent (Barrington Stage Company),Songs of Innocence and Experience (with William Finn), Marco Polo (with Peter Mills) and Seasick (with Judson Pearce Morgan). Her musical director/associate musical director credits includeBernarda Alba, Dessa Rose, James Joyce's The Dead and My Life with Albertine. This is going to be a HOT TICKET, folks, because all the singers in town are trying to score a tune from this amazing composer. Call Birdland for reservations now...212.581.3080 or click on www.InstantSeats.com/Birdland!
This coming Thursday and Friday, September 28 and 29, Billy Stritch and I are bringing Cast Party to Austin, Texas! Yee haw! Check out Austin Cabaret Theatre for all the details...and if you have friends in the area, please send 'em in to see us! It's gonna be fun! October 6, 2006No one is allowed to say “they don't write good songs anymore” around me. This past week's “Broadway at Birdland” concert, The Songs of Deborah Abramson, was proof that smart, melodic, touching, funny songs are still being written in abundance for the stage. And what a cast to sing those tunes! That's our diva composer Ms. Abramson (left) in scarlet, posing with singers Manoel Felciano,Sally Wilfert, Megan Lawrence, Theresa McCarthy, Charlie Brady,Marco Pagula and Michael Winther. The place was packed with cheering show-folk like Chip Zien and the about-to-be-in-concert-at-Birdland Julia Murney. The following Cast Party was way fun, too, with lots of regulars, along with Wicked's Chelsea Krombach, Ruben Flores, Steven Scarpetti, and Fortune Esposito, who performed on guitar with daughter Jenna! Many thanks to Tedd Firth and Wayne Batchelor, on piano and bass, for keeping the music playing! Please check out our FLICKR page to see more photos of all the fun!
Billy Stritch and I had an absolute ball when we took Cast Party to the Austin Cabaret Theater last week. Stuart Moulton has created the best performance space in the Southwest, and we can't wait to go back! You can't believe the talent we got to hear...there's a lot of fantastic music in Austin! It was great to see some old Texas pals, like the amazing Sharon Montgomery (left with Billy and me), artiste extraordinaire Sherle Stevens, diva Hedda Layne and Bonnie Kudlicki, with whom I crashed an Osmond concert reception in 1978. Don't ask.
October 13, 2006Who's luckier than us? Not only do we get to celebrate the theater and music scenes with some of the most talented people on the planet every single Monday night, but we get to have proof that it happened! Mark Rupp has been photographing Cast Party and all the Broadway at Birdland concerts for quite a while, and with brilliant results. Last week, he caught Harmony Keeney and Kassira (left and below) in action, charming the crowd with their voices and general dazzlement. Check out ourFLICKR site to see hunderds of gorgeous performance shots of all those brilliant, funny, bizarre moments that helped make Cast Party what CBScalled “Extreme Open Mic!” And while we're blowing our own horn, last week's Time Out New York said some really nice things about us! Many thanks to Adam Feldman for the constant support and kind words!
You can also read what Billy Stritch and I were up to in Austin if you click onAlice in Chains, Blackholicus, 'Jim Caruso's Cast Party'. (That's the first time those three acts have been mentioned in the same article...!) Phew. That's a lot of self-promotion, and I must lie down now. Luckily I can temper that with a toast to some brilliant songwriters on the latest Prying! Video Feature on TheaterMania.com. See what Larry O'Keefe, Alice Ripley,Anthony Rapp, Victoria Shaw, Lari White, Marcy & Zina, Ben Moore, andMarcus Hummon all told me when I asked what song they wished they would have written!
October 20, 2006Belters, comics, legends, composers, folkies, jazzers, theater kids, reality stars, impersonators...you name it and we had it at Monday night's Cast Party! It was great to see the amazing Miss Marilyn Maye (left, photo byMark Rupp) walk through the Birdland doors...and even better to hear her sing! (She holds the record for most appearances on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show"…75 times!) Her “Guess Who I Saw Today” was absolute magic, and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt why she was Johnny's favorite singer of all time. Another great performance was given by newcomer Haven Burton, who is currently starring in Rent on Broadway. Haven...come back soon! “Project Runway” designer Malan Bretonentertained us with his lovely voice and spooky laugh, and “Trading Spaces” bad boy Douglas Wilson cheered everyone onto great heights!
Remember when news anchors all looked like Walter Cronkite? Oh, how things have changed! My great pal Suzanne Sena is in town doing the overnight on-air slot for Fox News during the next few weeks. That's the blonde News-Hottie (left) posing with Jazz-Hottie Hilary Kole. You can't say we don't provide beautiful photos…and you can see many more on ourFLICKR site! Enjoy!
Broadway at Birdland!Julia Murney's upcoming Monday night 7pm concert is sold-out, baby! As I always say, if you are desperate to see this divine Miss M and don't have a reservation, show up at Birdland around 6:30 to see if there are any no-shows. What a fabulous way to celebrate her brand new CD and homecoming from the Wicked tour! On Monday, October 23 at 7pm, Julia Murney (left) returns to the stage at Birdland, performing songs from her recently released CD, “I'm Not Waiting” (Sh-k-boom Records). Tom Kitt (composer of the upcoming High Fidelity and musical director of Laugh Whore) will act as musical director for the evening. There will be a $25 cover and $10 food/drink minimum. Julia is a celebrated actress whose stage performances have garnered critical and popular acclaim since starring as Queenie in the 2000 world premiere ofAndrew Lippa's The Wild Party, a role that earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Musical. Her other stage credits include the Broadway production of Lennon, as well as theManhattan Theatre Club's productions of A Class Act and Time and Again, for which she received a Lucille Lortel Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress. For the past six months, Ms. Murney has been starring as Elphaba - the Wicked Witch - in the National Tour of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Wicked. “I'm Not Waiting” was produced by Grammy Award-nominee Andrew Lippa, with musical direction by Tom Kitt and Stephen Oremus. The album was recorded and mixed by Grammy Award winner Joel Moss. Included in the Birdland concert will be songs from the CD by pop composers Bobbie Gentry, John Lennon, Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, and Tom Waits, as well as theater writers Tom Kitt, Andrew Lippa and Stephen Schwartz.
Stick around after the concert for another Cast Party, with Billy Stritch andSteve Doyle on piano and bass. One NEVER knows who will show up to wow the crowd...and we LOVE it that way! November 3, 2006Monday night's Cast Party was an embarrassment of cabaret riches, with brilliant performances by Birdland's Natalie Douglas, the Algonquin's Paula West, our pal Annie Hughes, and the Queen of the Supper Clubs, Miss Julie Wilson (left). Julie's “But Beautiful” brought the packed club to a standstill, resulting in a standing-o for our favorite diva. Jamie deRoy (below left) stopped by to entertain us with the hilarious “Jews Don't Camp” and to discuss her upcoming country-themed extravaganza starring Larry Gatlin (see ad below for details). Both photos you're looking at were taken by Mark Rupp, and you can see many more on our FLICKR site! That's where you'll also see some gorgeous pix from Joe Marzullo, and if you click onBroadwayWorld.com, you'll see shots by Walter McBride. Thanks to all three for making us feel like movie stars!
Next Monday, come see what all the hoop-la is about, when Cast Party returns, along with Billy Stritch and Steve Doyle on piano and bass, respectively. You never know WHO will show up!
Broadway at Birdland!Coming up at Birdland on Monday, November 6 at 7pm will be the brilliant cellist Peter Sachon (left) in “Strings Attached,” directed by Tony winner Victoria Clark, with special guests Kelli O'Hara,Michael Winther and Ms. Clark! Peter's diverse career has included performances with The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Audra McDonald, Deborah Voight, Victoria Clark, Pink Martini, and Dee Snider. He performed in and can be heard on the recordings of the Broadway productions of The Light in the Piazza and Fiddler on the Roof. This fall he will join the Broadway production of Tom Kitt andAmanda Green's new musical High Fidelity. Mr. Sachon has commissioned and premiered many new works for the cello by such composers as Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), Stephen Flaherty(Ragtime), Ricky Ian Gordon (My Life with Albertine), Jeff Marx(Avenue Q), Michael John LaChiusa (Marie Christine), and George Stiles (Mary Poppins). There will be a $25 cover and $10 food/drink minimum. Please call 212.581.3080 or InstantSeats.com/Birdlandfor reservations.
The following Monday, November 13, we're thrilled that superstar Jeff Daniels (at left) will return to Birdland for a 7pm concert! Best-known for such films as “Terms of Endearment” and “Dumb and Dumber,” the actor/singer/songwriter has been writing songs since the 1970's, something most people didn't know, because - unlike numerous other celebrities - he kept them to himself. A few years ago, someone suggested that he might raise funds for his pet project, the Purple Rose Theater in his hometown of Chelsea, Michigan, by going on stage and singing some of those songs. Lo and behold, a musical star was born! The subsequent CD, “Live and Unplugged,” is a collection of live performances, which humorously and often touchingly, reflect on his life and career. “If William Shatner Can, I Can Too” is Daniels' take on celebrities trying to be taken seriously as musicians. “The Dirty Harry Blues” describes the joy of being killed by Clint Eastwood on film. He bares his heart in “Kathy,” which describes his first date with his wife, and then thanks his mother for support and guidance in “Momma Never Left Her Oldest Boy Alone.” Make your reservations NOW...it's gonna be a sellout! (212.581.3080)
November 17, 2006There were a trajillion major events happening on the theatrical scene Monday, and I'm so happy to tell you that, from all reports, each was jammed! Jeff Daniels' Birdland show was stupendous, and the followingCast Party, hosted by the utterly brilliant Christine Pedi (left, in a photo byMark Rupp) was a smash! She sings like a bird, and as an impersonator, has more celebs coming out of her than the parking lot at Spago. She tells me the evening held 'electronic thrills, musical massage and flatware stimulation.' This all sounds very fishy to me, but I do know that Janet Wright sang “All That Jazz” and played the spoons. (I bet the producers of the Chicago 10th Anniversary are quasi-suicidal that they didn't get her. But we did!)
Meanwhile...I was downtown, producing and hosting a terrific event calledBroadway Hits A High Note: Theater Stars Go Classical. We almost called it Fancy Songs Jim Doesn't Understand, but that had no ring. Anyway, it was a sell-out benefit for the Greenwich House Music School. Look at the cast we assembled! (left, photo by Jack Miller) That's (back row) Ben Moore, Michael Schiralli (director), Cathy Venable (musical director), Ray McLeod, Susan Powell, Nancy Anderson, Jeff Blumenkrantz, Jennifer Hope Wills, Preston Smith, Christiane Noll,Michael Slattery, Peter Sachon, Brian Childers, Sarah Rice, Glenn Seven Allen, (kneeling) Michael Winther, Eddie Korbich, me and Max von Essen. Stephen Schwartz even introduced an aria from the opera he's writing. Spectactular performances were given by the nicest and most talented performers on the planet, and I thank them all profusely.
Click on our FLICKR site to see more fotos of fabulous faces! Broadway at Birdland! It's always a bloomin' sellout when Jeff Blumenkrantz (left) books a show at Birdland. ALMOST every seat is sold for Monday's upcoming concert...so you better call the club now (212.581.3080) if you plan on joining us. Joining the Tony-nominated composer will be Broadway divasVictoria Clark (Tony winner/The Light In The Piazza), Liz Callaway (Tony nominee/Baby), Mary Testa (Tony nominee/42nd Street, On The Town),Alysha Umphress (XL Star) and the amazing Michael McElroy (Tony nominee/Big River). Mr. Blumenkrantz will host from the piano, with Peter Donovan on bass and Sean McDaniel on drums. Jeff began his career as an actor, performing in such Broadway shows as Into the Woods,Threepenny Opera, Damn Yankees, How to Succeed in Business..., andA Class Act. Although he joined the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop in 1987, it wasn't until 2000 when Audra McDonald recorded his song “I Won't Mind” (lyrics by Annie Kessler and Libby Saines) that his songwriting career was launched. Since then, Jeff received a Best Original Score Tony® nomination for his songs in Urban Cowboy, and he contributed the Rita Gardner song, “I Think,” to last year's Off-Broadway production, The Audience. His one-act pieces, Woman with Pocketbookand Precious Little Jewel, have been performed at several regional theatres, and he has been commissioned to write songs by Carnegie Hall and the Guggenheim's Works and Process program. Jeff is a recipient of the BMI Harrington Award and the Dramatists Guild Jonathan Larsen Memorial Musical Theatre Fellowship. He is a graduate of Northwestern University. The Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook is available for purchase atwww.jeffblumenkrantz.com.
The following Monday, November 27, we're thrilled to have a triple-header in our Broadway At Birdland series! Jack Donahue at 7pm, and Euan Morton at 9 and 11pm! November 24, 2006Happy Thanksgiving! We are so thankful for all of you...from the loyal friends and fans to all of the brilliant talent who have made Birdland their musical home. We are working harder than ever to bring you the best entertainment we can find! Speaking of that, last Monday's Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook was a sold-out, jammed-to-the-rafters hit! His incredible songs were performed by a cast that included Alysha Umphress, Liz Callaway, Victoria Clark, Mary Testa (left with Mr. B), andMichael McElroy. Broadway insiders flocked to the show, including the very tall, very talented Tommy Tune. The following Cast Party had some swells in the crowd, too! Lisa Lambert, who co-wrote the music and lyrics to The Drowsy Chaperone, is becoming a regular, and we're delighted. Michael Feinstein went back to his roots and performed “Isn't It Romantic.” There was folk and rock and jazz and pop and showtune and trombone and tap and guitar and trumpet-impression. Mark Bermanand Steve Doyle kept the music humming, and everyone had a ball. Click on our FLICKR site to see more purdy pix!

Debbie and the Russ Kassoff Big Band hosted one of the most thrilling nights of music we've heard, what with the wall of sound, the big, juicy arrangements, and that lusty voice! Debbie even had her old palMario Cantone introduce her. If you look to the left, you'll see them backstage, oohing and aahing over our sponsor Charlie Lapson's 'opening night' present! There were some theatrical heavy-hitters in the crowd, including Jerry Mitchell, David Zippell, Mark Sendroff, Barry Brown,Michael Kerker, Scott Coulter, Beau Gravitte, and our simply favoriteSteven Brinberg! The following Cast Party was equally starry and so musically varied, what with the many voices of Christine Pedi, Grammy winner Lari White, Tony winning-stud Jarrod Emick, trumpet dudeDomenic Farinacci, and original Manhattan Transfer gal Laurel Masse! We do it all again next week, with David Budway and Steve Doyle making up the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra.

The beaches were just named 'Most Beautiful In The World' by Travel & Leisure Magazine, and we couldn't agree more. Hilary Kole, Billy Stritch, Steve Doyle and I (left) were treated like royalty, and trust me when I say we can't wait for the next time! SO many thanks toRandy Swartz, Mark and Barbara Pankhurst, Peter Jakubowski, Betty & Alastair Dods, Wilma Dietsche, Ben Strogatz, The Somerset on Grace Bay and the Turks & Caicos Friends of the Arts Foundation.
