“JULIE HALSTON IS THE FUNNIEST WOMAN ON THE PLANET." That’s what Rex Reed said, when he finally caught his breath from laughing at the Broadway and television actress.
“JULIE HALSTON IS THE FUNNIEST WOMAN ON THE PLANET." That’s what Rex Reed said, when he finally caught his breath from laughing at the Broadway and television actress. Halston’s brand new show, “The Cocktail Hour: A Reality Show,” which she debuted at Birdland on Sunday, was a complete smash – with a packed-to-the-walls sell-out crowd, brilliant new stories, a new Joan Crawford reading, and special guest star Alison Fraser. This is one reality show that SHOULD be on television. It has charm, loads of humor, and at it’s core, an actress who happens to be one of the best story-tellers of our time. Just ask smart folks like the New York Times’ Cintra Williams and actor Mike Doyle (with Julie, left), actor Peter Bartlett, playwright Charles Busch, and director Carl Andress, who all left Birdland hoarse from screaming for ‘more!’ La Halston will return!
Monday’s Scott Alan concert was a madhouse of talented folks and fans! Songwriter Alan writes wonderful pop-infused theatrical compositions, and this time, he chose some of the hottest up-and-coming Broadway boys to sing them. (Here he is, with “American Idol”’s RJ Helton and Broadway diva Carly Jibson.)

(There he is in the photo on the left, with “American Idol”’s RJ Helton and Broadway diva Carly Jibson - see our Flickr page for more of the fun.) It was exciting to see two leading men from the TV/theater world, Neil Patrick Harris and Gregory Harrison, both enjoying the music and the scene! We hope they make a return soon, and we know Scott Alan will be back on our stage soon!
There were spectacular performancesin including one by Birdland Songbird Caroline Amaradio
The following Cast Party took all the great energy from Scott’s show and continued it into the wee hours of the night! With a packed house that included Broadway and tv supah-star Linda Lavin (opening in Collected Stories any minute), there were spectacular performances by Birdland Songbird Caroline Amaradio (left, by Stephen Sorokoff), Rob Langeder, Aleks Pevek, Annamarie Smith-Butz, Daniel Banks, John Thomas Oaks, Charles West, Shaina Farr, Zach Berger, Jane Schecter, and a barbershop quartet hilariously called, um, The Eight Balls. (I know.) The night ended with a completely impromptu performance of “Respect,” sung brilliantly by Jason Paige, with The Extremely Caucasian Backup Singers, Hilary Kole, Jenna Esposito, Rob Langeder and me. Tedd Firth, Steve Doyle and Steve Bakunas kept the music swinging, as they’ll do this coming Monday, when we expect to see YOU at Cast Party!

JIM CARUSO IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT BROADWAY/TELEVISION VETERAN ILENE GRAFF will be performing her concert, “First You Dream” at Birdland on Monday, April 19 at 7pm. This concert will be part of the long-running Broadway at Birdland series, showcasing performers and composers from the Great White Way.

Accompanied by her Musical Director-husband Ben Lanzarone, Graff will perform material ranging from Harold Arlen to the Beatles, the Bergmans to Sondheim, all with unique interpretations and arrangements.

Ilene Graff is best known to audiences as Marsha Owens, the mom on the long running ABC comedy “Mr. Belvedere.” She made her professional Broadway debut years earlier on the musical stage in Promises Promises, the Neil Simon, Bacharach/David hit, where she understudied the leading lady and sang backups from the orchestra pit. She performed the role of Fran Kubelik in New York before starring in the National Tour. One of her biggest Broadway triumphs was creating the role of Cleo in the Cy Coleman, Michael Stewart musical comedy hit I Love My Wife, directed by Tony Award winner Gene Saks. She can be heard on the show's Original Cast Album. Other theatre credits include: Charley's Aunt with Charles Grodin, Cabaret as Sally Bowles, Annie Get Your Gun as Annie Oakley, and Over Here directed by Mr. Belvedere himself, Christopher Hewett. Ilene created the role of Donna in the world premiere of composer/arranger/producer husband Ben Lanzarone's musical, You and Me, with book and lyrics by Lloyd J. Schwartz; she won the Artistic Directors' Award of the Valley Theatre League for her performance. She had the thrill of performing the role of Mama Rose in a Los Angeles revival of Gypsy as well as entertaining Jerry Herman himself at a performance of Jerry's Girls and is very proud to have co-starred in ABC/Disney's film version of “South Pacific,” working with Glenn Close and Harry Connick, Jr.

BILLY STRITCH'S WATERS OF MARCH: THE BRAZILIAN ALBUM: "...Stritch imaginatively captures the magic of the bossa nova rhythm on some terrific cuts, including three by Brazilian music icon Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of these, probably the most memorable is "Someone to Light Up My Life," which most Americans first heard on Sarah Vaughan's legendary Brazilian album. Here Stritch captures the simple sensitivity and all the yearning poignancy the composer had in mind when he first penned it. Sergio Mendez's "So Many Stars" takes you on an indolent, dreamy, and gentle journey...[Stritch's] phrasings and delicate nuances are so insightful that the album becomes a powerful musical statement with many subtle, yet potent, moments." -- John Hoglund, Backstage. The CD and all things Billy Stritch are at www.billystritch.com.
