one of my all-time fave singers, Mr. Larry Gatlin
IT WAS OSCAR NIGHT AT BIRDLAND THIS PAST SUNDAY, although I didn’t notice Joan Rivers shrieking ‘Who are you wearing?’ as the excited crowds entered the building.  The occasion was Jamie deRoy’s very special Oscar Show, which celebrated Academy Award-winning songs and movies.  Jamie gathered quite an award-winning crew to sing the Hollywood ditties, including John McDaniel, Peter Sachon, Terri White, Gregg Edelman, Bonnie Langford, Christina Bianco and…one of my all-time fave singers, Mr. Larry Gatlin (left, thanks to Stephen Sorokoff).  Larry, an occasional Cast Party-er sang two songs…“I’m Easy” from “Nashville” and this year’s nominee from “Crazy Heart,” “The Weary Kind.”  He’s one of the most naturally gifted singers on the scene, with one foot in contemporary country music and one foot in good, old-fashioned showbiz – with all the appropriate schtick.  Go to iTunes right now and buy his “I’ve Done Enough Dying Today,” and you’ll hear one of the purest voices on earth.  Do it now.  I'll wait…
Lisa Brescia
On Monday night, we were excited to have Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk on our stage, showcasing their stupendous songbook with singers like Lisa Brescia (left, thanks to Monica Simoes), Caissie Levy, Jay A. Johnson & Kacie Sheik from Hair, Celia Keenan-Bolger (Spelling Bee), Morgan Karr (Spring Awakening), Annaleigh Ashford (Legally Blonde, Wicked), Jenni Barber (Spelling Bee), Matt Doyle (Bye Bye Birdie), Katie Thompson (R.R.R.E.D.), Meghann Fahy (Next to Normal), as well as popular indie musicians Vienna Teng and The Spring Standards.  The talent was shockingly brilliant, and we can’t wait for the next Kerrigan/Lowdermilk outing with Broadway at Birdland!  Thanks to Katie Riegal at Sh-K-Boom Records for pulling the whole, gorgeous evening together!  Check out more of Monica's wonderful photos on our Flickr page!
The grand finale was Miss Julie Wilson, who closed the show with a heartfelt and perfectly poignant performance of “But Beautiful.”
The following Cast Party was one of my all-time favorites!  In an evening boasting world-class talent like 13-year old Juilliard genius Beka Gochiashvili, 90-something songwriter Ervin Drake (singing his hit, “It Was A Very Good Year”), Nick Dalton & Abbie Mueller (the two talented stars of Romance, Romance), my old friends The Tonics, leading man extraordinaire Charles West, and Marvelous Marilyn Maye – the grand finale was Miss Julie Wilson (left, by Sorokoff!), who closed the show with a heartfelt and perfectly poignant performance of “But Beautiful.”  It doesn’t get any better than that – and the fans, friends, and tourists who made up the Cast Party audience got a rare treat and a lesson in musical simplicity.  A standing ovation goes to the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra (Tedd Firth, Steve Doyle and Dustin Jensen).  They make everyone sound and feel like superstars.  Boy, are we lucky to have them!

Kate Baldwin is a veteran of Broadway and national stages alike.  Her starring role in the recent revival of Yip Harburg's and Burton Lane's classic musical, Finian's Rainbow has proved her to be in the same league as Broadway's finest.  The New York Times says of her work, "The show's first moment of magic arrives shortly after Ms. Baldwin's Sharon McLonergan descends the hills of Missitucky.  Ms. Baldwin's cool, pure soprano gently rides the crests of the undulant melody, tugging at each question in the lyric with a sensitivity that perfectly expresses the song's tender, yearning essence”.

Kate’s debut album on PS Classics entitled "Let's See What Happens" features Lane and Harburg songs from both stage and feature films.  Her interpretation of these melodic masterpieces has earned her the respect and praise from some of the leading names in the business.  Houston Chronicle critic Everett Evans says, "One need only hear a few measures of Baldwin applying her flair, intelligence, vivacity, acting skill and vocal gift to realize that she is every bit the discovery critics claim her to be".  Steven Suskin's review of her CD on Playbill.com says, "Ms. Baldwin sparkles throughout."  Kate has appeared in the Broadway casts of The Full Monty, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Wonderful Town.  She starred in the national tour of Irving Berlin's White Christmas, Henry V at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, She Loves Me at the Willliamstown Theatre Festival, and South Pacific at Arena Stage, earning a Helen Hayes Award nomination.  Kate's concert work includes several appearances with Stephen Sondheim as a featured performer in his critically acclaimed evening, "A Conversation with Stephen Sondheim."  She has appeared at the Chicago Humanities Festival, sung with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC, the Portland Symphony Orchestra and with Broadway conductor Rob Fisher as part of Lincoln Center's prestigious American Songbook series.

BILLY STRITCH'S WATERS OF MARCH: THE BRAZILIAN ALBUM: "...Stritch imaginatively captures the magic of the bossa nova rhythm on some terrific cuts, including three by Brazilian music icon Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of these, probably the most memorable is "Someone to Light Up My Life," which most Americans first heard on Sarah Vaughan's legendary Brazilian album. Here Stritch captures the simple sensitivity and all the yearning poignancy the composer had in mind when he first penned it. Sergio Mendez's "So Many Stars" takes you on an indolent, dreamy, and gentle journey...[Stritch's] phrasings and delicate nuances are so insightful that the album becomes a powerful musical statement with many subtle, yet potent, moments." -- John Hoglund, Backstage.
