SHOWBUSINESS IS MY LIFE. In case you had any doubts, on Sunday night, I was proud to present The Broadway Boys with special guest Shoshana Bean (left) in the Broadway at Birdland series. The Boys have never sounded better, and the addition of Ms. Bean was inspired! Her poppy, riffy, dazzling belt was showcased perfectly by their creamy vocals. It’s been so fun to watch the growth of this audio and visual treat of a vocal group – and we are already in talks for their next appearance! If you haven’t caught this act, for crying out loud – join us next time!
Then...Natalie Douglas (left) appeared onstage the following night in what we are pretty sure was her billionth time on our stage. And oh, we were delighted to have her again! Ms. Douglas brought us a brand new show, “To Lena: A Tribute To A Lady And Her Music.’ That can only mean Lena Horne – so the music and stories were gorgeous, funny and touching.

Ms. Douglas brought us a brand new show, “To Lena: A Tribute To A Lady And Her Music.’ That can only mean Lena Horne – so the music and stories were gorgeous, funny and touching. Mark Hartman’s arrangements were suitably affecting, and the band kicked mucho ass. This act should only be as successful as Natalie’s Nina Simone tribute, which has taken the country by storm and spawned a brilliant recording. Nina, Lena…who’s next? Tina Turner? Dina Merrill? Gina Lollobrigida?
Bohmer, who is currently knocking ‘em dead as Father in Ragtime, did a dead-on impersonation of Robert Goulet (left). It was creepy and hilarious and perfect!
Then…there was Cast Party. By all accounts, it was one of the best ones in our seven years. That’s saying something, too. We were over the moon to celebrate Michael Portantiere and Gerard Allesendrini’s new book about Forbidden Broadway with past stars of the long-running hit. Folks like Ron Bohmer (Ragtime), Nora Mae Lyng, Christina Bianco, Gina Kreizmar, Michael West, James Donegan, and Roxie Lucas all did signature numbers from the show, as well as Mr. Allesandrini himself! Bohmer, who is currently knocking ‘em dead as Father in Ragtime, did a dead-on impersonation of Robert Goulet (left). It was creepy and hilarious and perfect!
Another musical highlight was Christine Lavin’s performance of “Viva La Compagnie,” in which she recruited a few dozen regulars to sing a thank you to the fabulous Birdland staff!
Broadway, television and movie folks like Stephanie J. Block (9 To 5), Jen Cody (On The Town), Hunter Foster (Ordinary Days), Michael Winther (33 Variations), Manu Narayan (Bombay Dreams), Jason Graae (LA’s Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks), Erich Bergen (“Gossip Girl”), Klea Blackhurst (Everything The Traffic Will Allow), Annaleen Beachy (West End Wicked), Christine Pedi (Newsical The Musical), Michael Leon Wooley (“The Princess & The Frog”), Peter Bartlett (“The Princess & The Frog”) all showed up to sing and/or watch the fun…even Village Voice columnist Michael Musto showed up to survey the Cast Party antics.

If you know me, (and why shouldn’t you?) you know who Kay Thompson is. If you don’t, she was the vocal arranger at MGM in the 40’s, coached everyone from Lena Horne to Judy Garland, had the hippest nightclub act on the planet, and wrote “Eloise.” That’s the nutshell version. Well…Sam Irvin and Michael Feinstein have put together an astonishing 3-cd 75-track collection of Kay’s material (left), and we’re celebrating it this coming Monday at Cast Party.

SO many of her fans will be there to literally sing her praises, including Ruth Williamson (White Christmas), Dee Hoty (Bye Bye Birdie), John “Lypsinka” Epperson, Dori Legg and Peter Mintun. Coming to take part in the celebration will be Kay’s pals Hilary Knight (illustrator of “Eloise”), playwright Mart Crowley (Boys In The Band), Marti Stevens (MGM movies aplenty), and playright/performer Charles Busch! There will be prizes and hoopla galore – so you better come see! Holla, holla, it’s Jubilee Time, y’all!

BILLY STRITCH'S WATERS OF MARCH: THE BRAZILIAN ALBUM: "...Stritch imaginatively captures the magic of the bossa nova rhythm on some terrific cuts, including three by Brazilian music icon Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of these, probably the most memorable is "Someone to Light Up My Life," which most Americans first heard on Sarah Vaughan's legendary Brazilian album. Here Stritch captures the simple sensitivity and all the yearning poignancy the composer had in mind when he first penned it. Sergio Mendez's "So Many Stars" takes you on an indolent, dreamy, and gentle journey...[Stritch's] phrasings and delicate nuances are so insightful that the album becomes a powerful musical statement with many subtle, yet potent, moments." -- John Hoglund, Backstage.
