MONDAY NIGHT SEEMED LIKE FAMILY NIGHT AT BIRDLAND! At the early concert, our old pal Patrick DeGennaro celebrated his new brand CD for and with his family, friends and throngs of fans. I’ve known Patrick since our ‘salad days’ at a wonderful club in the Village called “Eighty-Eights.” It was the hub of cabaret activity in the late 80’s and 90’s, and he was one of the go-to piano men, who also happened to sing like a bird. Those talents only increased, and now, he’s singing, playing, writing and performing with a spectacular band and some swell singers (left) in some pretty hot spots, including the Broadway at Birdland series! Thanks, Patrick, for yet another wonderful evening of pop/rock razzle-dazzle!
Another dazzle-ment was the appearance of Nonsequitor (left), a 14-person acapella group from Columbia University.
Even though there were some extremely talented newcomers to the Cast Party scene, like Hairspray’s Carly Jibson (left), who sang with Darren Ledbetter, most of the room was packed. Guitar man David Goldman, Connie Francis afficianado Jenna Esposito (below, left) , the hilarious Ray Jessell, superstar folkie Christine Lavin, Marvelous Marilyn Maye, swinging Sean Harkness and Doug Acosta, and my “Liza’s At The Palace” brother Johnny Rodgers all brought their many talents to the Party. Aaron Weinstein fiddled in red socks, Maureen Taylor sang Jule Styne, Patrick Oliver Jones baritoned, Jonathan Shue tenored, Abby stunned, Eric Millegan charmed, Edward Lovett swang*, Jenny Lynn Stewart trilled, and William Blake, once again, stopped the show! Thirteen year-old Russian jazzer Beka proved why he’s already studying at Juilliard, Natalie Douglas gave us a taste of her upcoming Lena Horne show, and West End star Rachel Izen made a thrilling New York City debut! ith beloved regulars, who took turns showing off on the Birdland stage!
Another dazzle-ment was the appearance of Nonsequitor (left), a 14-person acapella group from Columbia University.
The list went on and on…but we don’t want to forget David Coss, Brittany Beaudry and Carol Bufford, who were beyond fantastic. Of course, Stephen Sorokoff was there photographing the whole night, and you can check out the proof on our FLICKR site! There were dozens more talented singers, and we hope they return to the fun soon! Of course, our fingers are crossed that YOU join in the musical madness soon! This coming Monday, Tedd Firth and Paul Gill will be the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra – so you know it’ll be great! I hope to see you there…or we'll suspect that you're a little bit square!

* I know swang isn’t particularly a word. So sue me. Edward swang.

BILLY STRITCH'S WATERS OF MARCH: THE BRAZILIAN ALBUM: "...Stritch imaginatively captures the magic of the bossa nova rhythm on some terrific cuts, including three by Brazilian music icon Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of these, probably the most memorable is "Someone to Light Up My Life," which most Americans first heard on Sarah Vaughan's legendary Brazilian album. Here Stritch captures the simple sensitivity and all the yearning poignancy the composer had in mind when he first penned it. Sergio Mendez's "So Many Stars" takes you on an indolent, dreamy, and gentle journey...[Stritch's] phrasings and delicate nuances are so insightful that the album becomes a powerful musical statement with many subtle, yet potent, moments." -- John Hoglund, Backstage.
