Chita Rivera, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones backstage at Birdland. Photo: Steve Sorokoff
"BROADWAY LEGEND CHITA RIVERA IS IN TOP FORM AT BIRDLAND!" That’s what the pages of Variety screamed the day after she opened at Birdland! Chita is celebrating the release of her new solo album, "And Now I Swing," from new indie label Yellowsound. Onstage, she says that she’s been on Broadway since 1950, which means she's now entering her 60th year on the boards. That’s right…she’s 76, but you’d never know it from the high-energy razzle-dazzle she serves up in her 90-minute show. She has five more – and I think you better call the box office now (212.581.3080), unless you want to miss one of the best nightclub performances of the year. You’ll hear some fantastic material, including "Sweet Happy Life," Vincent Youmans' "More Than You Know," Jacques Brel's "Carousel," Carol Hall's "Circle of Friends," and three from Kander and Ebb, as well as medlies from "Bye Bye Birdie," "West Side Story" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman." Opening night was a Who’s Who of Showbiz Royalty, as evidenced by Steve Sorokoff’s photo (left). That’s Michael Douglas with Catherine Zeta Jones, whom Chita loved in “Chicago,” the movie. “You can keep the Oscar…I’ll keep my vamp,” she camped as the band bumped us all into “All That Jazz.” Musical-theater honor roll in the house included names like John Kander, Terrence McNally, Bebe Neuwirth, Alan Cumming, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Lucie Arnaz, George Dvorsky, Stephanie J. Block, Colleen Ballinger, David Hyde-Pierce, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Harvey Fierstein and Tommy Tune -- and those were only the ringside tables. It was a night none of us will ever forget.
Joining Ms. Sings onstage were Broadway's Shoshana Bean, who subjected herself to an onstage critique, and radio host/comic Seth Rudetsky, who helped define Miranda's unique style with a vocal deconstruction. Photo: Steve Sorokoff
Internet sensation, singer and vocal coach Miranda Sings made another triumphant appearance at the Broadway at Birdland concert series on Monday, October 12. Joining Ms. Sings onstage were Broadway's Shoshana Bean (left, thanks to Mr. Sorokoff), who subjected herself to an onstage critique, and radio host/comic Seth Rudetsky, who helped define Miranda's unique style with a vocal deconstruction. Cast members from Broadway's Bye Bye Birdie (Allie Trim, Danny Quadrino, Deanna Cipolla, Kevin Shotwell, Riley Costello, Paul Pilcz and Catherine Blades) performed "It's A Hard Knock Life" from Annie, with Sings essaying the role she was born to play, Miss Hannagan. Joey Goldberg, the happy winner of an online singing contest from the Miranda site, sang in person for the diva, and I was lucky enough to perform "Anything You Can Do..." with the golden-throated, raven-haired beauty. (Cross that dream off the list…) The evening ended with a re-creation of Miranda's first music video "Single Ladies,” wardrobe malfunction and all!
Lars Sorensen doing a brilliant, “Adolpho,” all the way from Denmark. Photo: Steve Sorokoff
The following Cast Party was super-sized – with more singers and a bigger, hotter audience than we’ve seen for ages! We even had a pre-wedding party in the house, enjoying the sounds of talented folks like 13 year-old jazz pianist Beka Gochiacvilli, Paul Iacono from the movie “Fame,” Blair Taylor, Lars Sorensen (left, doing a brilliant, “Adolpho,” all the way from Denmark), Maureen Taylor, Jeff Siegel, Jonathan Shew, Brenda Braxton, Kevin Early (singing a great song from the upcoming Seeing Stars), and the marvelous Marilyn Maye! Tedd Firth and guest bassist Paul Gill sounded fantastic – and helped everyone sing their best! We do it all again next Monday – so be there or be ridiculously square!
- Jim!

BILLY STRITCH'S WATERS OF MARCH: THE BRAZILIAN ALBUM: "...Stritch imaginatively captures the magic of the bossa nova rhythm on some terrific cuts, including three by Brazilian music icon Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of these, probably the most memorable is "Someone to Light Up My Life," which most Americans first heard on Sarah Vaughan's legendary Brazilian album. Here Stritch captures the simple sensitivity and all the yearning poignancy the composer had in mind when he first penned it. Sergio Mendez's "So Many Stars" takes you on an indolent, dreamy, and gentle journey...[Stritch's] phrasings and delicate nuances are so insightful that the album becomes a powerful musical statement with many subtle, yet potent, moments." -- John Hoglund, Backstage.
