Luba Mason prepares backstage at Birdland
What gorgeous shows Luba Mason performed for our Broadway at Birdland series this past week! The blonde beauty warmed the autumn air with her wonderful mix of Brazilian jazz - and her musicians were some of the best in the world. As you can see in the photo (left), she even makes our backstage hall look glamorous! We can't wait for her triumphant return to Birdland - watch for her upcoming CD, “Krazy Love!”
One of my all-time favorite country artists, Ty Herndon, made a surprise visit, as you can see in this photo by Joe Marzullo.
The following Cast Party was, as always, a varied cornucopia of musical styles! Forbidden Broadway's Christina Bianco showed why she's this season's critic's pick, KT Sullivan showed off her Jerome Kern material, and those wacky Canadians, Michael Holt and David Celia were at once screamingly funny and musically superb! One of my all-time favorite country artists, Ty Herndon, made a surprise visit as you can see in the photo (at left) by Joe Marzullo. It was a thrill to hear his voice live and in person - we hope it's the first of many visits from the Nashville dude. We were also dee-lighted to welcome back the extremely talented Mark Aaron James, who was visiting from London. Funny gal Joan Crowe got us in the autumnal mood with her lederhosen - complete with knee socks. Happy Oktoberfest, everyone! We do it all again (not necessarily the lederhosen…) this coming Monday, when Cast Party will welcome David Budway at the piano, and Steve Doyle on bass. Come see what all the fuss is about!
- Jim!
Jim Caruso's Cast Party and Theatermania.com are proud to present: Broadway at Birdland
Ron Abel
Monday's Jason Robert Brown concert is totally sold out, so I'm not even gonna tempt you with description. You know, though, that if you forgot to buy tickets and are dying to see JRB, you can show up at Birdland on Monday night and vie for a bar seat! We open the doors at 5pm for the 7pm shows.

The following Monday, October 20, is going to be a huge night of varied entertainment! At 7pm, we're thrilled to bring back RON ABEL in BROADWAY BLOND - An Evening of Musical Highlights! New York critics called his previous sold-out run “a show-biz event” and “dazzling with original songs, musicianship, and amazing guest artists.”  Ron's special guests on this very special evening will include Broadway stars Sierra Boggess (Ariel in The Little Mermaid), Lucie Arnaz and Tony Nominee Valarie Pettiford. Mr. Abel will also introduce newly written songs from his Broadway bound musical Bricktop, which is being produced by Whoopi Goldberg. Call Birdland to reserve your seats - 212.581.3080 or www.BirdlandJazz.com!
You WON'T believe it. We can't believe it ourselves. We have secured the one, the only, the inimitable WING to perform her very first New York concert at Birdland later that night - at 9:30pm.
THEN…you WON'T believe it.  We can't believe it ourselves.  We have secured the one, the only, the inimitable WING to perform her very first New York concert at Birdland later that night - at 9:30pm. The Hong Kong native and “Asian sensation” achieved cult status through her unique vocal stylings, mastering hit songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber, ABBA, the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Mariah Carey, AC/DC, and so many more! (Click for her singular rendition of "Close to You")

With millions of fans worldwide, she has taken the globe by storm.  Wing has been compared to Florence Foster Jenkins, who raised alternative singing into an art form. Before “American Idol” even hit the air, Wing was already a global phenomenon, outshining the success of Idol star William Hung and putting Clay Aiken to shame with her sixteen-hit CDs. Recently, she was immortalized with her very own episode of “South Park,” the animated sensation. Join the festivities at Birdland in what is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as this goddess among men, who's making the trip from her home in New Zealand especially for the occasion, takes the Big Apple by storm and gives “alternative music” a whole new meaning...

For tickets, call 212.581.3080 or click: www.BirdlandJazz.com

PLEASE NOTE: The regularly scheduled Jim Caruso's Cast Party will start following the Wing concert.

BILLY STRITCH AND CHRISTINE EBERSOLE, "SUNDAY IN NEW YORK": selections culled from the pair's recent live show in NYC. In a review, Stephen Holden of the New York Times commented: "Ms. Ebersole, a bright, zany soprano and ebullient clown, can whirl on a dime and evoke an inexpressable sorrow under a facade of garrulous pluck. When she adds a spinning vibrato to her lemony voice, she can turn into a playful latter-day Kathryn Grayson or Jeanette MacDonald. Mr. Stritch, a pop-jazz pianist and gifted arranger, is a solid exponent of the gregarious, swinging Vegas style epitomized by Steve Lawrence." SQUIGS DRAWS THE STARS. Justin 'Squigs' Robertson is well known in the Los Angeles theatre community for capturing show biz folks in pen and ink, and his acclaim is quickly spreading across the country. He loves sushi. His whimsical illustration and design is aided and abetted by his parallel career as an actor and entertainer.
