So - Amy Birnbaum did it again. She and co-producer Dominique Sharpton (left surrounding The Crystals' LaLa Brooks) put together a brilliantly spectacular musical happening at Birdland on Monday night
Before I get into my weekly swoonings about our various goings-on, I'd like to invite you to click on "Broadway At Birdland" Makes Mondays Celebratory! NY1, my favorite 24-hour news channel, did a brilliant job catching the energy and spirit of the Broadway series and Cast Party! Producer Frank DiLella promised me he'd do something for us a few months ago, and damned if he didn't come through with flying colors! A trajillion thanks to him and the good people at NY1!

So - Amy Birnbaum did it again. She and co-producer Dominique Sharpton (left surrounding The Crystals' LaLa Brooks) put together a brilliantly spectacular musical happening at Birdland on Monday night. “Soul Deep: The Anthology of Black Music,” had the packed house shrieking their lungs out for some of the best singers on the Broadway, pop, r&b and gospel scenes. Amy and Dominique - our stage is your stage any time you want! Many thanks to Derek Storm (who took the photo left), Genevieve Rafter Keddy and diva Sophia Stevens for some truly great photos, which you can see on our Flickr site!
Cast Party
The following Cast Party certainly kept the mojo flowin' (a phrase I don't understand, but will use anyway). Tony-winning composer Lisa (Drowsy Chaperone) Lambert and Lion King alum Josh Tower joined the throngs in cheering Broadway leading lady Luba Mason (left, thanks to Steve Sorokoff) , who happily made her Cast Party/Birdland debut! Besides being gorgeous and talented, Luba wins the prize for being the all-time best smelling Cast Party-er in history. Singer/songwriter Henry Gainza was joined by his posse, which included drummer Ludwig Alfonso, singer Yuri Rodriguez and the amazing Mariand Torres, and sang "Trust" with all their hearts. The legendary jazz bassist Jay Leonhart gave us a musical thrill, Broadway's Jana Robbins belted a show-stopper, singer/pianist Brad Simmons rocked a Billy Joel tune, and hipster cellist Trevor Exter showed why he deserves to be one of four finalists in the Madison Square Garden Sound Tracks Contest. We were thrilled to see the return of one of the best singers in town, Rudy Martinez, as well as jazz trumpet-dude Domenic Farinacci. Chip Deffaa brought in the cast of The Seven Little Foys, including Eddie Foy's great-grandson, Ryan Foy, who we happen to think is a superstar in the making! Tedd Firth and Steve Doyle were never better as The Cast Party Symphony Orchestra, but would you expect anything else? We do it again this coming Monday. Dig up a zippy ditty to perform, or just come and enjoy the festivities.
- Jim!

Jim Caruso's Cast Party and TheaterMania.com are proud to present “THE JEFF BLUMENKRANTZ SONGBOOK” Monday, September 8, 2008 at 7:00pm, as part of the long-running, Nightlife Award-winning concert series Broadway at Birdland.

Broadway stars Theresa McCarthy, Alysha Umphress, and Sally Wilfert will join cellist Peter Sachon and acclaimed Tony-nominated composer JEFF BLUMENKRANTZ to sing “THE JEFF BLUMENKRANTZ SONGBOOK."  BLUMENKRANTZ’s work has been heard in the New York productions of Urban Cowboy, The Audience, and Audra McDonald's song cycle "The Seven Deadly Sins" at Carnegie Hall.  His songs have been recorded and performed by such notable singers as Audra McDonald, Victoria Clark, Lauren Kennedy, Megan Mullally, Maria Friedman, and Sutton Foster.

BLUMENKRANTZ's career as a songwriter began at Northwestern University, where he was a four-year contributor to the celebrated Waa-Mu Show.  While pursuing a career as an actor in New York, he joined The BMI Workshop and participated in the Dramatists Guild's Musical Theatre Development Program and Jonathan Larson Fellowship and is the 2001 recipient of the BMI Advanced Workshop Harrington Award.  His one act musicals, “Woman with Pocketbook,” written with Annie Kessler and Libby Saines, and “Precious Little Jewel,” written with Libby Saines, have been performed at regional theatres and have both won the Ten Minute Musical Competition.  2005 marked the publication of The Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook, a piano/vocal folio of twenty ongs, and the first episode of The Jeff Blumenkrantz Songbook Podcast, a performance and interview show featuring Jeff's songs sung by some of musical theatre's great talents.  In 2008, Jeff produced The BMI Workshop Songbook Podcast, which featured twenty new songs from the members and alumni of the  famed musical theatre writers' workshop. He is currently collaborating with lyricist/librettist Beth Blatt on a new musical entitled Hashi.

SQUIGS DRAWS THE STARS. Justin 'Squigs' Robertson is well known in the Los Angeles theatre community for capturing show biz folks in pen and ink, and his acclaim is quickly spreading across the country. He loves sushi. His favorite song is 'It's Only A Paper Moon'. And he genuflects upon merely hearing the name of Al Hirschfeld. His whimsical illustration and design is aided and abetted by his parallel career as an actor and entertainer.
