Stephanie J. Block, Sebastian Arcelus, Matthew Morrison
Monday night's celebration of David Green's songs was called “Mr. Green's Opus,” because David has mentored and taught some of the most successful folks on the Great White Way!  Quite a few of them showed up to sing his praises and wonderful compositions, including Stephanie J. Block, Sebastian Arcelus, Matthew Morrison (left, thanks to Darren Sussman), Becca Ayres, Marissa Parry, Lindsay Mendez, and lots more.  Birdland was packed to the gills with showbiz heavy hitters, like Stephen Schwartz, Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty, Philip Hernandez, Kevin Chamberlain and Logan Lipton, all of whom joined in the stomping and cheering for more.  We look forward to hearing much more of David's music in the near future!

The following Cast Party also boasted some blazing-hot talent on a hot summer night! There were all kinds of newcomers like Patrick Jones, Matthew Feld, Lucy Shropshiere, and Tynan Davis, who really impressed us with their musical abilities. Of course, we were happy to see and hear old friends like Amy Stephenson, Sarah Rice, Lumiri Tubo and the amazing Carol Woods, who is back on Broadway starring as Mama Morton in Chicago! Sometimes, the audience is as interesting as the cast of Cast Party, and Monday's crowd was exceptional! We spied City of Angels lyricist David Zippel, Vegas Phantom and all 'round leading-man superstar Brent Barrett, the walking encyclopedia of all-things-music Mr. Michael Feinstein, and a special surprise visit from Dame Edna's alter-ego, Barry Humphries! (Photo of Jim with Michael and Barry, below left, compliments of Steve Sorokoff.) Thanks to Barry, we were thrilled to have a quick chat with the ultimate Dame, and she told us that she was 'enchanted to visit a place of such refinement' and hear her possoms singing. We can only hope and pray that she'll be returning to a Broadway stage near us very soon! Check out all the swell photos on the Flickr site! Of course, Billy Stritch and Steve Doyle were absolutely brilliant in their accompaniment capabilities, reminding everyone why Cast Party is known as 'Extreme Open Mic.' Singers don't get to work with musicians of that calibre every day, folks, and we're so proud to have them as part of our Symphony Orchestra!
Yes, that's Celeste Holm with husband Frank Basile and Michael Feinstein
Next week, while I'm trodding the boards in Germany and Spain with Liza Minnelli, the amazing Christine Pedi will be hosting, with pianist extraordinaire Mark Berman at the Bosendorfer and Steve Doyle on bass.

We're thrilled and delighted to tell you that LUCIE ARNAZ is coming back to Birdland this coming week! That's right, "Lulu's Back In Town" at 7pm on July 16th/17th and at 8:30 and 11pm on July 18th/19th!
If you're reading this on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, drop everything and head to Birdland to catch Lucie Arnaz in “Lulu's Back In Town!”  Yes, she's back on our stage July 16th/17th at 7pm and July 18th/19th at 8:30pm and 11:00pm, as part of the long-running, Nightlife Award-winning concert series Broadway at Birdland.  Lucie, along with her musical director/arranger of 20 years, Ron Abel, make their magnificent return to Broadway at Birdland with very special guests Arnaz' daughter Katherine Luckinbill and son Joe Luckinbill.  As if I had to tell you, for the past four decades, showbiz royalty Lucie Arnaz has captivated audiences with her triumphant performances on both stage and in film.  Lucie got her equity card playing many of the best women's roles in the theatre including Sally Bowles in Cabaret, Daisy Mae in L'il Abner, Princess Winifred, opposite Kaye Medford, Rudy Vallee, Christine Andreas and Don Amendolia in Once Upon a Mattress, Goodbye Charlie, and A Place to Stay, opposite John Ritter.  She recently starred in WItches of Eastwick in London and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on Broadway.  After growing up, quite literally, on television with her mother Lucille Ball, Broadway beckoned and Lucie auditioned for and won the coveted role of the wacky, Sonia Wolsk, in the Neil Simon/Marvin Hamlisch/Carole Bayer Sager musical They're Playing Our Song, for which she received The Los Angeles Drama Critic's Circle, Theatre World and Outer Critic's Circle Awards.  On the big screen, Lucie has starred opposite Neil Diamond and Sir Laurence Olivier in “The Jazz Singer” (for which she received a Golden Globe nomination), opposite Tom Laughlin in “Billy Jack Goes to Washington,” alongside Ken Howard in “Second Thoughts,” and opposite Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Henry Winkler in “Down to You.”  Most recently Lucie costarred with Richard Roundtree, Robert Loggia and Bob Forster in “Wild Seven,” and in a controversial new film about second hand smoke from writer/director Alyssa Bennett entitled, “The Pack” that debuted at Sundance this fall.  Call Birdland at 212-581-3080 for reservations, or go to www.BirdlandJazz.com.

On Monday, July 21, Jim Caruso's Cast Party and TheaterMania.com are proud to present Valarie Pettiford at 7pm.
On Monday, July 21, Jim Caruso's Cast Party and TheaterMania.com are proud to present Valarie Pettiford at 7pm.  Valarie will give you the reasons why she is grateful, as she puts her thoughts to music in her new show entitled "Thankful."  The multi-talented, Tony nominated actress appears for one night only at Broadway at Birdland, blending a mixture of jazz, classic standards and musical theatre, with a stellar band musically directed by the brilliant Ron Abel.  Valarie was thrilled to start 2008 with a recurring role on the hit comedy series “House of Payne” as Sandra Lucas. Last year she opened the 2007 Summer Concert Series with The Pasadena Pops, conducted by Rachel Worby. She went on to shoot the pilot “Anatomy of Hope” for HBO as Deanna Rivers, directed by JJ Abrams. In February 2006, Pettiford completed her fourth season of the hit TV series “Half & Half” (now in Syndication) that earned her three NAACP Image Award nominations for her portrayal as Big Dee Dee Thorne. She guest starred as Dr. Lana Whitford in “CSI Miami” (Spring 2006), Ellen Laskow in “Bones” (Spring 2007) and as Aunt Jackie in the number one film for 3 weeks, and now the number one DVD, “Stomp the Yard,” (A Sony Screen Gems production 2007).  Valarie's Broadway and tour credits include Fosse, for which she was nominated for a Tony Award and recognizes by the Drama League, Chicago (opposite Chita Rivera) London West End debut, Sophisticated Ladies, original cast and understudy for Judith Jamison.

Justin 'Squigs' Robertson is well known in the Los Angeles theatre community for capturing show biz folks in pen and ink, and his acclaim is quickly spreading across the country. He loves sushi. His favorite song is 'It's Only A Paper Moon'. And he genuflects upon merely hearing the name of Al Hirschfeld. His whimsical illustration and design is aided and abetted by his parallel career as an actor and entertainer.
