The following Cast Party was blessed, literally, by guest host critic/author/impressario -- and occasional cantor -- Scott Siegel (left - photo by Steve Sorokoff). Performing a stirring Hebraic blessing over the wine at the start of the evening, he received laughs and applause aplenty.
On Monday night, composer Georgia Stitt had Birdland jumping with throngs of people absolutely loving the many extraordinary performances of her amazing songs. The place was packed with show folk and the ones who love them, and we can't wait for her return to our stage! One member of the congregation (I mean audience) almost made a donation. Following that, keeping religion and chit-chat to a minimum, Scott focused on the performers and pulled in a talented, eclectic brace of entertainers on a night when most of the regulars were away for the Memorial Day Monday. One of the biggest names Scott garnered, making his Cast Party debut, was the multiple Nightlife Award-winning jazz vocalist Allan Harris, who performed a stunning "Bring Him Home" from Les Mis. There were lots of other new talents on hand, as well, including a spectacular guitar player by the name of Billy Rogan, and a couple of composer/singers, Brit Neal and Galia Arad, all of whom wowed the crowd. Among the returning favorites it was great to have David Ippolito and Ray Jessel back, as well as the young phenom from Dallas, William Blake. Anchoring the evening at the microphone were folk star Christine Lavin, theater star Michael Winther, and composer icon, Ervin Drake, who premiered a new comedy song that had the place in stitches.
Many thanks to Scott Siegel for having stood in for me while I'm in the UK with Liza and my onstage brothers (left), where we're having almost as good a time as you.
Cast Party audience member par excellence, Jeanine Tolve (she has been coming every Monday night for years and years) got up to sing. She was sensational, though Scott was asked not to tell Jim for fear he'd insist she sing again (whoops!). This Cast Party had a slightly different feel than most others, perhaps, in part, because Scott was guest hosting. More than half the folks were at Cast Party for the first time! Many of the newbies were Scott's fans from his concerts at Town Hall. Not only did they get to see more than 33 performances in slightly over three hours (I'm not even going to mention Scott's clothes), they also got the chance to hear Christine Pedi channel more famous voices than a satellite dish. She also brought along the best surprise of the night: Lance Maron, the one and only singing Ear, Nose & Throat Doctor from South Africa! He was damned good, too! With the brilliant Cast Party Orchestra of Tedd Firth and Steve Doyle, it was another fun night at Cast Party. Many thanks to Scott Siegel for standing in for me while I'm in the UK with Liza and my onstage brothers (left - photo credit: Maestro Billy Stritch), where we're having almost as good a time as you. The whole thing happens again next week, with Christine Lavin, 'the nicest human in showbusiness,' guest-hosting, and Tedd and Steve rounding out the musical party. We hope you join them!
- Jim!

BILLY STRITCH AND CHRISTINE EBERSOLE: "SUNDAY IN NEW YORK." The selections were culled from the pair's recent sold out run at The Metropolitan Room in New York City. In a review of that performance, Stephen Holden of the New York Times commented: "Ms. Ebersole, a bright, zany soprano and ebullient clown, can whirl on a dime and evoke an inexpressable sorrow under a facade of garrulous pluck. When she adds a spinning vibrato to her lemony voice, she can turn into a playful latter-day Kathryn Grayson or Jeanette MacDonald. Mr. Stritch, a pop-jazz pianist and gifted arranger, is a solid exponent of the gregarious, swinging Vegas style epitomized by Steve Lawrence." TheaterMania.com:
"The Party simply glows with New York nightlife ambiance. It feels like a throwback to another era but it has this era's top-notch entertainers dropping in to schmooze, sing, eat, and drink.
