Those brilliant Broadway Boys (left) stormed the Birdland stage on Monday, dressed to the nines in their holiday finery.  And oh, the music they created!  From “Hark, The Herald Angels Sing” to funked-up showtunes, the vocals and arrangements were shockingly brilliant.  The Boys were joined by two of Wicked's gorgeous witches, Julia Murney and Chelsea Krombach, who thrilled the sold-out crowd with their physical presence and musical presents.  You can see more phab photos taken by Kerry Long on FLICKR!

the original West Side Story Maria, Miss Carol Lawrence The following Cast Party was a continuation of the seasonal fun, with a surprise visit from the original West Side Story Maria, Miss Carol Lawrence! (Mark Rupp took the great photo, left.) Our great pal Douglas Denoff was kind enough to bring her into the Birdland fun, and something tells me we haven't seen the last of the General Foods Instant Coffee gal! The evening was also punctuated by a hilarious interview with Jan Thomas, who hosts a wildly popular chat show on Norwegian television. Thanks to perfume superstar Geir Ness, we will be famous in Norway. And it's about time. You never know who will show up at Cast Party, do you?
We are currently in the midst of a very special run of concerts by Christine Ebersole and Billy Stritch.  We are currently in the midst of a very special run of concerts by Christine Ebersole and Billy Stritch.  To present this act is a thrill for me, since I truly believe it's one of the best acts on this or any other planet.  I'll save the adjectives and accolades, because it's selling out, but trust me when I say you should call Birdland NOW to snag a ticket for tonight (Thursday at 8:30), Friday or Saturday (8:30/11pm).  That's 212.581.3080 or www.BirdlandJazz.com.  You'll be happy you did... - Jim!

On Sunday, December 9 at 7pm, singer-songwriter Patrick DeGennaro will be joined by his band to perform an all-new show featuring recent originals, including “Standing Up Straight” and “Pick Up the Power,” alongside pop classics, such as “Maybe I'm Amazed.” “Paperback Writer,” and contemporary theatre favorites by leading composers & lyricists Adam Guettel (The Light in the Piazza) and Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years) - all featuring his own inimitable style and flair.  Praised as “one of the best pop voices in town” (Backstage), DeGennaro most recently won the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs' 2007 Award for Outstanding Male Vocalist.  An athletic vocal powerhouse with a soulfully-crafted whisper, Patrick has performed at celebrated venues including Joe's Pub; Town Hall; The Bottom Line; Symphony Space; and CBGB's.  He is also one of this year's Nightlife Award finalists, and a Back Stage Bistro Award winner for Outstanding Male Vocalist.  The New York Post calls DeGennaro “sexy, smoldering and passionate.”  Call Birdland at 212.581.3080 or click on www.BirdlandJazz.com.

On Monday, December 10 at 7pm, Broadway at Birdland brings you Darius de Haas, signed, sealed and delivered!
On Monday, December 10 at 7pm, Broadway at Birdland brings you Darius de Haas, signed, sealed and delivered!  He's finally bringing “Wonder: The Songs of Stevie Wonder” to our stage!  From the opening strains of “Ribbon in the Sky” to the low-down reggae funk of “Master Blaster,” De Haas and his jamming eight-piece pop-soul band celebrate the joyous music of Stevie Wonder.  The acclaimed revue dedicated to Wonder, who Darius calls “my musical guru, my rock, my Gershwin,” has blown away music festivals from coast-to-coast and sold out performances at Lincoln Center's American Songbook Series.  Stephen Holden, of The New York Times, raves “De Haas elicited the same sense of awe produced by Mr. Wonder's best records…the seasons flashed by; passions flared and died; new life took root.”  The Village Voice adds, “When De Haas sings, it's like the equivalent of watching silk ribbons being unfurled across the sky.”  Darius de Haas notably won The Village Voice's Obie Award in 1998-1999 for his remarkable performance in the title role of Running Man, an act The New York Times raved was “one of the best musical performances this season.”  He made his Broadway debut in Kiss of the Spider Woman and went on to be featured in the heralded Broadway productions including RENT, Marie Christine and Lincoln Center's revival of Carousel, as well as the international tour of world premiere I Was Looking at the Ceiling…, directed by Peter Sellars.  He has also appeared in multiple film and TV projects, and his voice can be heard on the film soundtracks of Anastasia and the Oscar-winning Chicago.  As a soloist, de Haas has sung in some of New York's finest concert halls and clubs including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center; as well as Los Angeles's Disney Concert Hall and London's Royal Festival Hall. He has also recorded a critically-acclaimed solo CD, Day Dream: Variations on Strayhorn.  Please call Birdland at 212.581.3080 or click on www.BirdlandJazz.com for reservations!

ON THE CD, AT THE MOVIES, DAVE KOZ, A MULTI-GRAMMY NOMINATED SAX PLAYER with two gold albums and ten top 5 hits to his credit, takes center stage on eight instrumentals: "Over The Rainbow," "As Time Goes By," "The Pink Panther," "Summer of '42," "Cinema Paradiso," "Schindler's List," "It Might Be You" and " The Shadow of Your Smile." The 40-piece orchestra enlisted by Koz and producer Phil Ramone provides a majestic, sweeping soundscape for the saxophonist and his guest vocalists, including Vanessa Williams, who contributes an exquisite version of "The Way We Were," and Johnny Mathis, who perfectly captures the bittersweet quality of "The Shadow Of Your Smile," from The Sandpiper. Other highlights include Anita Baker's elegant rendering of "Somewhere," from West Side Story and Donna Summer's shimmering version of "A Whole New World," from Disney's Aladdin. Barry Manilow duets with Koz on a hip arrangement of Henry Mancini's " Moon River," and India.Aire delivers a deeply personal performance of "It Must Be You," from Tootsie.
