Andrea Burns

November 15, 2007

'Great aplomb!”  That's how the constantly-amazing Christine Lavin handled her Cast Party guest-hosting duties this past Monday.  While I was busy singing and dancing my way into the hearts of Vancouverians, I felt secure in knowing that she would be at once funny, kind, energetic and wildly entertaining helming our weekly Birdland escapade.  She had some wonderful talent to corral, too.  Between the marvelous Tom Chapin, soulful Marvin Parks, unplugged William Michaels, nostalgic “Moonlight & Memories,” hysterical Eddie Eng and one of the best voices on Broadway, Andrea Burns, the night was a complete success.  (Photo of Andrea left, by Denise Winters.)  A trajillion thanks to Christine, and everyone involved, for keeping the fun balloon inflated while I'm away!  By the way, our shows are going swimmingly here in Vancouver.  What a gorgeous city, eh?  Liza has never been better, and the crowds literally rush the stage at the end of the concert!  Our Kay Thompson set is going over like gangbusters, too.  The audience can't seem to get enough of the swingin' arrangements Cortes, Johnny, Brian and I get to sing.  If you don't know much about Kay, you might want to Google her.  She was the vocal arranger at MGM, coached Judy, Lena and Mel, wrote “Eloise,” demanded that we “Think Pink" in “Funny Face,” and starred in the hippest nightclub act on the planet, along with the Williams Brothers.  We're re-creating that act with Liza, who was Kay's goddaughter.  It's a thrill to be part of a show that feels like history-in-the-making.  Check out our schedule below, and come see us when we come to a theater near YOU!

Barry Williams as Greg Brady You simply HAVE to come to Cast Party at Birdland this coming Monday night.  First of all, there will be such a great vibe, thanks to the 7pm Lucie Arnaz concert (see below).  She always brings in a fantastic, starry audience who sticks around for the fun.  Then…we'll be celebrating my old pal Barry Williams - whom you undoubtedly know as Greg Brady!  He's back in New York starring in a show called “Growing Up 70s” at The Theater at Ha! on 46th Street.  The whole cast will be joining us, showing off tunes from the show, giving away tickets, re-living the sunshine 1970's, and generally helping us get down with our bad selves.  So slip on your big bells, check your mood rings, and join us.  You could even sing a snappy, upbeat 70's tune!  Come on…you know you want to…- Jim!

Lucie Arnaz
This coming Sunday and Monday at 7pm, Lucie Arnaz is bringing her family to the stage at Birdland!  It's mostly sold out, but you can still show up and get a bar stool for one of the best shows in town.  The show is called, “She's Back…and This Time It's Personal!” because she'll be joined by her kids Joe and Katharine Luckinbill, as well as Musical Director Extraordinaire Ron Abel and his band.  Talk about showbiz history, kids…this will be a night to remember!  Variety says, "A superior nightclub act...Lucie Arnaz delivers the goods in old fashioned style...there is something for everyone and it's dished up with showbiz pizzazz.  Through it all she is able to communicate a genuinely warm personality that allows her considerable talent full sway."  We hope to see YOU there!

Coming up in the Broadway at Birdland series, the return of our fave flapper, Nancy Anderson on November 25, with special guest stars Melissa Errico and Dee Hoty!  They just might offer up some vintage Boswell Sisters arrangements, you just never know!  Call the club at 212.581.3080 or www.BirdlandJazz.com.

MINNELLI & CARUSO: TOGETHER AGAIN
ON THE CD, AT THE MOVIES, DAVE KOZ, A MULTI-GRAMMY NOMINATED SAX PLAYER with two gold albums and ten top 5 hits to his credit, takes center stage on eight instrumentals: "Over The Rainbow," "As Time Goes By," "The Pink Panther," "Summer of '42," "Cinema Paradiso," "Schindler's List," "It Might Be You" and " The Shadow of Your Smile." The 40-piece orchestra enlisted by Koz and producer Phil Ramone provides a majestic, sweeping soundscape for the saxophonist and his guest vocalists, including Vanessa Williams, who contributes an exquisite version of "The Way We Were," and Johnny Mathis, who perfectly captures the bittersweet quality of "The Shadow Of Your Smile," from The Sandpiper. Other highlights include Anita Baker's elegant rendering of "Somewhere," from West Side Story and Donna Summer's shimmering version of "A Whole New World," from Disney's Aladdin. Barry Manilow duets with Koz on a hip arrangement of Henry Mancini's " Moon River," and India.Aire delivers a deeply personal performance of "It Must Be You," from Tootsie. At The Movies is a must-have for music and film lovers everywhere. Disappear into another world and spend some time At The Movies.
