Darius deHaas

Marilyn Maye

Septermber 14, 2007

You know me...I'm not one to overstate.  (No laughter, please.)  But Monday night's "I Feel Good," Broadway's Celebration of James Brown, was nothing short of historic!  It was dazzling when folks like Darius deHaas (left, thanks to D'Ambrose Boyd at www.D-Artisticexpressions.com), Maurice Murphy, Chester Gregory, Jesse Nager, Michael James Scott, John Eric Parker, Aisha deHaas, Chuck Cooper, Monroe Kent III, Lili Cooper, Joshua Henry, and Devin Richards took to the stage and sang their hearts out to honor the hardest working man in showbiz!  The Reverend Al Sharpton even showed up to speak about his close relationship with the Godfather of Soul.  The music was sublime, thanks to the 9-piece funk band, and the direction and mad organizational skills of one Amy Birnbaum. The extravaganza came to a close with everyone in the room gettin' up offa their thangs, dancing and singing.  "I Feel Good" was a fundraiser for the Broadway Inspirational Choir - and we were so proud to host the fun.  Check out Flickr! for many more photos!

The following Cast Party kept the high energy swirling, with brilliant performances by Marilyn Maye (left, thanks to Mark Rupp), KT Sullivan, lots of newcomers like David Celia, and beloved regulars.  Tedd Firth and Steve Doyle, the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra, went beyond the call of duty and provided amazing accompaniment for all the performers...and lots of laughs, too!  Next week, a guitar-playing Cast Party regular is releasing her 18th album...and there will be a special surprise gift for everyone who shows up.  Mark Berman and Mr. Doyle will be on piano and bass, respectively.

- Jim!

Amanda Green
Lynne Wintersteller, Michael Winther and Donna Lynne Champlin
This coming Sunday, September 16 at 7pm, please join one of our all-time fave composers, Miss Amanda Green (left, in a photo by Bill Westmoreland), when she'll be begging the musical question, "Does This Song Make My Ass Look Phat?"  Mandy will be joined by some spectacularly talented Broadway types, including Jenn Colella, Jonathan Dokuchitz and J.P. Walker, with musical direction by her High Fidelity writing cohort, Tom Kitt.  Read what really, really smart and savvy New York critics have to say about her work:

"Amanda's lyrics employ Sondheim style word-play transposed into a post-modern key.  I laughed so hard I thought I'd split a rib." - Terry Teachout, The Wall Street Journal

"Amanda Green's lyrics are as good as or better than most of what Broadway has had to offer in a long time.  They are clever, charming, witty, diverse, knowledgeable, beautifully fitted to character and most resourcefully rhymed.  Could anyone ask for more? -- John Simon

There will be a $25 cover and $10 food/drink minimum.  Call Birdland at 212-581-3080 or www.BirdlandJazz.com for reservations!

Songs from the new musical, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, which just completed a two-week run at Barrington Stage Co. will be presented as part of Broadway at Birdland on Monday, September 17 at 7 PM.  The score of the new musical is by Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen (The Burnt Part Boys) with book and direction by Joe Calarco (Shakespeare's R&J).  The cast includes Broadway veterans like Obie Award winner Donna Lynne Champlin (Sweeney Todd), Drama Desk nominee Lynne Wintersteller (Closer Than Ever), Michael Winther (Songs from An Unmade Bed), Matt Caplan (Broadway's High Fidelity and Rent), and Charlie Brady (BSC's The Burnt Part Boys).  Tom Kitt (composer/High Fidelity) is Musical Director for the concert. The Mysteries of Harris Burdick been described as "a wild ride through wonder, fear and the imagination.”  Find out what happens when a child goes missing from a phantasmagorical neighborhood inspired by Chris Van Allsburg's (Jumanji, Polar Express) famous picture book!  Recently profiled in the Dramatist Magazine under “Fifty to Watch,” Miller and Tysen have won both the Richard Rodgers and Jonathan Larson Awards. They began collaborating at New York University, where they received MFAs in musical theatre writing.  Last summer, their musical The Burnt Part Boys, played an extended, sold-out run at Barrington Stage Co.  There will be a $25 cover and $10 food/drink minimum.  For reservations call Birdland at 212.581.3080 or www.Birdlandjazz.com.
