Michele Lee, lyricist Chuck Steffan, Michael Riedel, Lucie Arnaz and Mr. Ron Abel
Cast Party graduate Erich Bergen (left) made a cameo, too, and showed off his fancy “Hairspray” Premiere hairspray.

July 20, 2007

When I say Ron Abel sold out both his Sunday and Monday night shows, I'm so not kidding.  It was really thrilling to see one of my favorite LA-based composer/arranger/musical director pals celebrated by incredibly talented singers and a packed house.  (If you look to the left, you'll see Michele Lee, lyricist Chuck Steffan, Michael Riedel, Lucie Arnaz and Mr. Abel)  His songs were crooned and/or belted by Lucie Arnaz, Michele Lee, Sally Mayes, Jack Noseworthy, Billy Stritch, Joey Gian, Valarie Pettiford, Paul Kreppel, Andrew Samonsky, Natalie Douglas, and so many more!  The audience was filled with famous faces from stage and screen...if you want to see them, you can click on BroadwayWorld.com!  And be watching for Mr. Abel's next Birdland appearance!

For some reason, the following Cast Party was just hilarious.  Everyone was in a jolly mood, and came ready to have a good time.  Of course, loads of our regulars were there to entertain, along with British musical genius/sex symbol Earl Okin, LA piano man Todd Schroeder, singer/composer extraordinaire Kevin Ray, and a vivacious redhead named Brooke Lundy, who sang her face off.  Cast Party graduate Erich Bergen (left) made a cameo, too, and showed off his fancy  “Hairspray” Premiere hairspray.  (Check out more pix by Mark Rupp on
Flickr!)  Of course, Tedd Firth and Steve Doyle accompanied everyone brilliantly.  In between songs, I favored the crowd with pithy 'poems' from a Leonard Cohen book given to me by the insanely funny Christine Lavin.  My favorite is called, "You Go Your Way."  Here it is...just for you:

You go your way
I'll go your way too

I hate to sound cranky, but it that it?  Two lines?  And not a rhyme to be found?  Let alone a period?  Really, Leonard?  Come to Cast Party next week, and maybe I'll do a sensitive reading of his “Puppet Time.”  It's a killer.  David Budway and Steve Doyle will be the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra.  That alone will be worth the price of admission!  Dust off your tap shoes, dig up some upbeat tunes and join us!  And please...no poetry.
- Jim!

On Sunday, July 22 at 7pm, we're happy to welcome The Fabulous Pink Flamingos in Live From the Lu'au Lounge.
Laura Bell Bundy on Monday, July 23

We have two fabulous shows coming up this next week!  On Sunday, July 22 at 7pm, we're happy to welcome The Fabulous Pink Flamingos (pictured left) in Live From the Lu'au Lounge.  They're a vocal trio who blend nostalgia and humor with three-part harmony.  In 2006, they were awarded the Back Stage Bistro Award for Outstanding Vocal Group, as well as being nominated for a Night Life Award.  Following another SRO tour of South America (Orlando mostly), the Pink Boys come home to New York, with an evening of Hawaiian-inspired Hularity.  As John Hoglund wrote in Back Stage, “They're the Kingston Trio on acid!”  So, dust off your coconuts, grab your tiki, and get ready to shake your hula hips!  Leis for everybody!  There will be a $25 cover, and a $10 food/drink minimum.  Call Birdland at 212.581.3080 or BirdlandJazz.com.

On Monday, July 23, Laura Bell Bundy (at left) serves up a heapin' helping of her beloved country music in Looking For A Place Already Gone, which is also the title of her new cd.   If you don't know, Laura Bell is the 2007 Tony and Drama Desk nominee for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, the Musical on Broadway. She also received a 2007 Drama League Honor for that performance.  Haven't you seen her 7-story billboard in Times Square?  Of course, she originated the role of Amber Von Tussle in the TONY Award-winning musical Hairspray, and played Glinda in the smash hit, Wicked.  Prior to that, she originated the role of Tina Denmark in Ruthless, The Musical! for which she received the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical and a Drama Desk nomination.  She can also be seen in the hit movie “Dreamgirls” as 'Sweetheart', a backup singer for the song, “Cadillac Car.”  Y'all better make your reservations now by calling Birdland at 212.581.3080 or clicking on www.BirdlandJazz.com.  There will be a$25 cover and a $10 food/drink minimum.

It was so fun to sit down and talk with composer/musical director/arranger Ron Abel.  We discuss all the great things going on in his career...from upcoming Broadway projects to ongoing musical associations with great showbiz gals like Lucie Arnaz and Michele Lee.  We also discuss his involvement with the vocal group “Gotham,” back in the day.  They changed a lot of things in the socially-significant 1970's, and you might like to read and hear more about them by clicking here.  Believe me, “Gotham” ruled.  And so does Ron Abel.
