Malcolm Gets' tribute to his musical mentor, Wally Harper, was a truly beautiful event. Birdland was packed with Broadway performers and fans, and we were honored to be the part of the affair!
Then...to say that Christine Lavin aced her first Cast Party hosting gig would be an understatement! She packed Birdland with hundreds of friends and fans, and created a real scene! Chris had the great idea to celebrate the legendary songwriter, Ervin Drake, who was happily in attendance. He and his wife Edith were seen cheering Jenny Lynn Stewart's performance of “I Believe” and Lodi Carr's “Good Morning Heartache.” Yep...he wrote those! Richard Skipper killed everyone with his uncanny impression of Carol Channing (left). Steve Sorokoff played “How About You” in honor of his 95-year old dad, who watched proudly. One of our favorite divas, KT Sullivan, warbled a tune in her own inimitable way. In honor of Paul McCartney's new CD, Budd (NY1) Mishkin and our David Budway played “Stump The Band” with Beatles' tunes. David Lutken from the Broadway production of Inherit The Wind, played and sang so great! Charles Glenn dropped in from St. Louis just to see what was going on at Birdland...turns out he happens to sing with The Fifth Dimension, so he gave everyone a taste of his musical brilliance! We've heard that President Bush has had some trouble finding them…but The WMD's were found on our stage performing their amazing pop/rock sound! Cabaret legend John Wallowitch (left) stopped the show with one of his original songs. All in all - a fabulous and varied night of music and mayhem...just the way we like it. You can see some great photos by our pal Mark Rupp on the Flickr! site, you know. Come next Monday...because it's gonna happen again! I know Christine would love to see you, so dust off your upbeat ditties and come to Birdland around 9:30! |

ON THE CD, AT THE MOVIES, DAVE KOZ, A MULTI-GRAMMY NOMINATED SAX PLAYER with two gold albums and ten top 5 hits to his credit, takes center stage on eight instrumentals: "Over The Rainbow," " As Time Goes By," " The Pink Panther," "Summer of '42," " Cinema Paradiso," " Schindler's List," " It Might Be You" and " The Shadow of Your Smile." The 40-piece orchestra enlisted by Koz and producer Phil Ramone provides a majestic, sweeping soundscape for the saxophonist and his guest vocalists, including Vanessa Williams, who contributes an exquisite version of " The Way We Were," and Johnny Mathis, who perfectly captures the bittersweet quality of " The Shadow Of Your Smile," from The Sandpiper. Other highlights include Anita Baker's elegant rendering of " Somewhere," from West Side Story and Donna Summer's shimmering version of " A Whole New World," from Disney's Aladdin. Barry Manilow duets with Koz on a hip arrangement of Henry Mancini's " Moon River," and India.Aire delivers a deeply personal performance of " It Must Be You," from Tootsie.
