Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich (left), two of our favorite song-smithing divas, certainly packed the house on Monday night. They had a wonderfully talented cast singing their clever, charming and often hilarious material. We were even privy to some never-heard songs from their upcoming Broadway musical, Ever After. If that show is half as good as the fabulous material we heard, the Great White Way is in for a treat!
The following Cast Party was as eclectic as always – with performances by Richard Pryor, Jr; Mike Eldred, Kassira, Jamie DeRoy, David Goldman, the Christines Pedi and Lavin, Michael Garin, David Lutken, Helen Russell, and so many more. Marvelous Marilyn Maye and Beautific Billy Stritch showed why they just got a rave review in the Times. Also spotted in the crowd were Late Night’s Paul Shaffer, cabaret legend Julie Wilson, Scott and Barbara Siegel (post-Broadway By The Year), and my high school dance teacher and choreographer, Mario Melodia! Tedd Firth and Steve Doyle concocted the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra in the most musically inventive and supportive way, and we all had a ball!
Take note! There will be NO CAST PARTY this Monday, April 2. Birdland has booked a private event, so we’ll all have the week off…but that just means that we will be even MORE excited to see you the following Monday, April 9!
If you happen to be in Las Vegas this weekend (Thursday, Friday and Saturday), I'll be performing with Liza Minnelli at the Luxor Hotel. Come cheer us on!

It’s unfathomable! We’ve booked a Broadway composer on something other than a Monday night! The beloved Jason Robert Brown (left) will be rocking, rolling and rabble-rousing on the Birdland stage this coming Wednesday through Saturday nights with shows at 9 and 11pm. Joining Jason onstage will be his band, The Caucasian Rhythm Kings, as well as singers Lauren Kennedy on Wednesday, April 4, Laura Benanti April 5 & 6, and Jenn Colella on April 7. Jason has been hailed as “one of Broadway's smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since Stephen Sondheim” (Philadelphia Inquirer), and his “extraordinary, jubilant theater music “ (Chicago Tribune) has been heard all over the world, whether in one of his musicals or in his own concert performances. The New York Times refers to Jason as “a leading member of a new generation of composers who embody high hopes for the American musical.” Jason is the composer and lyricist of the musical, The Last Five Years, which was cited as one of Time Magazine's 10 Best of 2001 and won Drama Desk Awards for Best Music and Best Lyrics. Jason won a 1999 Tony Award for his score to Parade, a musical written with Alfred Uhry and directed by Harold Prince, which premiered at Lincoln Center Theatre in December 1998, and subsequently won both the Drama Desk and New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards for Best New Musical. Parade was also presented on a national tour in 2000, which Jason conducted. His first musical, Songs for a New World, a theatrical song cycle directed by Daisy Prince, played Off-Broadway at the WPA Theatre in the fall of 1995, and has since been seen in more than two hundred productions around the world. There will be a $35 cover and $10 food/drink minimum. Coming up on Monday, April 9 will be composer Goergia Stitt (Jason’s wife!). She’ll bring a cast of Broadway stars including Andrea Burns, Will Chase, Jenn Colella, Matthew Morrison, Tituss Burgess, Cheyenne Jackson & Lauren Kennedy to sing her gorgeous songs! Call Birdland for reservations at 212-581-3080 or click on www.InstantSeats.com/Birdland. |

PS CLASSICS, THE LABEL DEDICATED TO THE HERITAGE OF BROADWAY AND AMERICAN POPULAR SONG, has joined forces with prolific cabaret producer Jamie deRoy on a new CD celebrating songwriters from the worlds of Broadway, pop, country and cabaret. But this new album has a twist: the songwriters are also the performers. Entitled IF I SING, after the Maltby/Shire song from Closer Than Ever, the album features 16 songwriters taking on their own material, some of it familiar, some totally unknown, in new performances and new arrangements. The theatre composers include some of Broadway’s finest, including Stephen Schwartz, Maury Yeston, Richard Maltby & David Shire, Robert Lopez & Jeff Marx, Andrew Lippa, Lucy Simon, and Gretchen Cryer & Nancy Ford, while the pop songwriters include such luminaries as Grammy Award-winners Julie Gold and Larry Gatlin. The album, produced by Paul Rolnick, with artistic direction by Barry Kleinbort, is in stores, or on the web at psclassics.com, amazon.com, footlight.com, For more info, click: jamiederoy.com.

ON THE CD, AT THE MOVIES , DAVE KOZ , A MULTI-GRAMMY NOMINATED SAX PLAYER with two gold albums and ten top 5 hits to his credit, takes center stage on eight instrumentals: "Over The Rainbow," "As Time Goes By," "The Pink Panther," "Summer of '42," "Cinema Paradiso," "Schindler's List," "It Might Be You" and "The Shadow of Your Smile." The 40-piece orchestra enlisted by Koz and producer Phil Ramone provides a majestic, sweeping soundscape for the saxophonist and his guest vocalists, including Vanessa Williams, who contributes an exquisite version of "The Way We Were," and Johnny Mathis, who perfectly captures the bittersweet quality of "The Shadow Of Your Smile," from The Sandpiper. Other highlights include Anita Baker's elegant rendering of "Somewhere," from West Side Story and Donna Summer's shimmering version of "A Whole New World," from Disney's Aladdin. Barry Manilow duets with Koz on a hip arrangement of Henry Mancini's "Moon River," and India.Aire delivers a deeply personal performance of "It Must Be You," from Tootsie. At The Movies is a must-have for music and film lovers everywhere. Disappear into another world and spend some time At The Movies.
