On Monday night, Broadway song-and-dance man Jeffry Denman debuted his nightclub act, “Jazz Turns” at Birdland. To say the evening was a success would be putting it mildly. The sold-out room went mad for his jazz interpretations of new and old theater songs – with liberal doses of the smoothest tap dancing in town. Jeffry, the Joshua Pearl Classic Jazz Trio and special guests Brian D’Arcy James, Nancy Anderson and Dennis Stowe (all left) entertained some talented show folk, including Capathia Jenkins, Ron Raines, Adam Jacobs and Mara Davi. Later that same night…the fabulous Christine Pedi (left) took over hosting duties at Cast Party. Michael Feinstein was there, enjoying the entertainment, and “Trading Spaces” Douglas Wilson was applauding talented folks like Ron Abel, Hilary Kole, Nate Birkey, Michael Winther and Jenny Rose Baker. Booth Daniels totally rocked the house with an awesome “Baby Got Back,” which is a Birdland rarity. Tedd Firth and Steve Doyle kept the mojo flowing at the piano and bass. Pedi, Firth and Doyle will be back next week for more fun and frivolity. Grab your tap shoes, your up-tempos and GO!
Some of you might know that I am on the road wth Liza Minnelli for the next week. We’ve finally opened our brand new show, which is a recreation of Kay Thompson & The Williams Brothers’ night club act. I was thrilled to see some Cast Party regulars in the crowd of 3000 at the Frank Sinatra Theater in Sunrise, Florida! We’re off to Sarasota (2/22), Clearwater (2/23) and Naples (2/26), then home to New York winter weather! Until I get back, in the words of the late, great Miss Thompson, “Happy Everything!”

 In her fifth visit to the Birdland stage, award-winning vocalist Natalie Douglas (left) and her band of Broadway All-Stars, led by Avenue Q’s Mark Hartman, bring an all-new show featuring the gospel music they grew up with.  MINNELLI & CARUSO: TOGETHER AGAIN... I'm beyond excited to tell you that I'll be performing on the road with my amazing friend Liza Minnelli quite a bit this next year! We're re-creating Kay Thompson and the Williams Brothers' historic nightclub act that took the world by storm in the late 40's and early 50's. Cortes Alexander, Johnny Rodgers, Clarke Thorell and I are working hard to approximate the blend and unique sound that Bob, Dick, Don, and Andy Williams brought to Kay's ingenious vocal arrangements, with Billy Stritch will be at the piano.  PS CLASSICS, THE LABEL DEDICATED TO THE HERITAGE OF BROADWAY AND AMERICAN POPULAR SONG, has joined forces with prolific cabaret producer Jamie deRoy on a new CD celebrating songwriters from the worlds of Broadway, pop, country and cabaret.
