Psst - after you've read all of the Cast Party scoop, be sure to spend a moment with our fabulous sponsors!
October 27, 2006
Julia Murney's Monday night concert was SRO, and the place was packed with the swellest of the Broadway set, all stomping and cheering for more! We spied Euan Morton, Manoel Felciano, Megan Sikora, Lari White, Erich Bergen, Kelli O'Donnell, Jerry MacIntyre and Michael Winther, along with scores of rabid Murney fans celebrating her homecoming, new CD and amazing set of pipes. She'll be back, that's for sure...keep reading this newsletter for details! The following Cast Party kept the high energy and fun on the Birdland stage, with Billy Stritch and Steve Doyle accompanying dozens of talented folks, including Leslie Kritzer (pictured left, photo by Mark Rupp), who is knocking 'em dead with her recreation of Patti Lupone's Les Mouches nightclub act! Brilliant idea. (Why didn't I think of that?!) Lurking around the party were “Trading Spaces” demon designer Douglas Wilson and Village People person Randy Jones (below, left) and a real-live song-and-dance man, Noah Racey, coming to a Broadway Theater near you in Curtains!

| Coming up at Birdland on Monday, November 6 at 7pm will be the brilliant cellist Peter Sachon (left) in “Strings Attached,” directed by Tony winner Victoria Clark, with special guests Kelli O'Hara, Michael Winther and Ms. Clark! Peter's diverse career has included performances with The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Audra McDonald, Deborah Voight, Victoria Clark, Pink Martini, and Dee Snider. He performed in and can be heard on the recordings of the Broadway productions of The Light in the Piazza and Fiddler on the Roof. This fall he will join the Broadway production of Tom Kitt and Amanda Green's new musical High Fidelity. Mr. Sachon has commissioned and premiered many new works for the cello by such composers as Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime), Ricky Ian Gordon (My Life with Albertine), Jeff Marx (Avenue Q), Michael John LaChiusa (Marie Christine), and George Stiles (Mary Poppins). There will be a $25 cover and $10 food/drink minimum. Please call 212.581.3080 or InstantSeats.com/Birdland for reservations.
Last year I produced a one-night-only benefit for the Greenwich House Music School called Avenue Q Swings. With many thanks to Bobby Lopez and Jeff Marx, the evening was a huge success and we raised enough money to buy two new Steinway grand pianos for the 100-year old school. This year, on Monday, November 13, I'm producing what will hopefully be another gorgeous night of music and fun called BROADWAY HIGH NOTE: Theater Stars Go Classical at the Minetta Lane Theater. We've assembled a thrilling roster of performers and composers who will hit the heights and show off their chops, singing songs from their classical repertoire. At press time, the cast includes: Jennifer Hope Wills (Phantom of the Opera), Eddie Korbich (Drowsy Chaperone), Max von Essen (Dance of the Vampires), Jim Walton, (Merrily We Roll Along), Nancy Anderson (Fanny Hill), Christiane Noll (Jekyll & Hyde), Glenn Seven Allen (The Light in the Piazza), Susan Powell (Sweeney Todd/NYC Opera, Miss America 1981), Michael Winther (Songs From An Unmade Bed), Ray Jaramillo McLeod (Wonderful Town), composer/performer Jeff Blumenkrantz (Tony nominee/Urban Cowboy), cellist Peter Sachon (The Light in the Piazza), Brian Childers (Danny and Sylvia; A Musical Love Story), composer Ben Moore (Bye Bye Broadway), Michael Slattery (Candide/London), and Ann Runolfsson (Victor/Victoria). (Cast subject to change.) The evening will also include an aria by Stephen Schwartz, the Tony Award-winning composer of Wicked, Godspell and Pippin. A highlight of the night will be two instrumental performances by young students of the Greenwich House Music School. The musical director for the show will be Cathy Venable who was pianist for The Light in the Piazza, Wonderful Town, the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, the Tulsa Philharmonic and Light Opera of Oklahoma. Directing the show will be Michael Schiralli, (The Tragic And Horrible Life Of The Singing Nun, Jackie Hoffman: The Kvetching Continues), and Matt Berman (TD for Liza Minnelli, Bea Arthur) is technical director. Tickets are $75 and $150* (*includes VIP reception). Call 212-242-4770 or email gharts@greenwichhouse.org. PLEASE COME TO THIS! It'll be an AMAZING night!!

WHEN DONNA MCKECHNIE CALLED BILL WESTMORELAND to photograph her, he said "Cassie...come on down!"...Well, he didn't really say that but it makes for good copy! Bill did say, however, that photographing the legendary Tony Award winner from A Chorus Line was a breeze, literally. "Donna just kind of floated in and so gracefully positioned herself for each pose. It made my job so easy. She has such grace and poise that I thought I was watching a performance with each click of the camera!" You can see Bill"s author photo of Donna in her new book, TIME STEPS MY MUSICAL COMEDY LIFE from Simon & Schuster. You can reach Bill at bwphotography@aol.com.
