Capathia Jenkins and friends at Birdland

September 30, 2005

Capathia Jenkins, Louis Rosen and David Loud absolutely enchanted the crowd during their Birdland concert on Monday. What a voice Capathia has - the purest, cleanest tones I've heard for a very long time. The material was so smart, and exquisitely arranged and performed. You can see that Birdland was packed with some of the most talented folks in town supporting Capathia (shown on the left in the pic above) with Aisha DeHaas (Caroline, Or Change), Ramona Keller (Brooklyn), Darius DeHaas (coming to Birdland January 30!), Karen Mason (Mamma Mia!) and Michael McElroy (Big River). The following Cast Party was a ball, with some beloved regulars and lots of newcomers singing, swinging and having a grand old time!

I'm excited to tell you, gentle Newsletter reader, about the new Cast Party VIP cards! All you have to do is ask, and one can be yours! At some point in the near future, a small cover will be implemented for the Party, and we certainly don't want YOU to have to pay! Just ask whoever is working at the front door and they will happily hand you a handy-dandy card to show upon entering your favorite show-biz soiree!

Coming up...

Stephanie D'Abruzzo in Avenue Q Swings!A few months ago, I was proud to co-produce, along with Tony-winners Bobby Lopez and Jeff Marx, a one-night-only extravaganza called Avenue Q Swings! It was an amazing success, and we raised over $100,000 for the Greenwich House Music School! Well, the show is returning, and this time Birdland will be the place to be this Monday, October 3 at 7pm! The show will feature very special guest stars singing songs from Avenue Q in jazz, classical and other surprising arrangements. At press time, the cast includes Broadway performers Barrett Foa, Ann Harada, Stephanie D'Abruzzo (above), Christian Anderson, Karen Mason, and Christine Pedi. The musical director for the show will be composer/arranger Mary Ann McSweeney, who plays bass each night in the Avenue Q orchestra on Broadway. I'm also thrilled that the event will be a benefit for The Jazz Foundation of America and the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic, both of which have been helping musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina find temporary and permanent housing, free healthcare and musical instruments. Call Birdland now (212.581.3080) to make a reservation - this show will be SRO all the way! Cast Party will follow, and we'll celebrate the return of Billy Stritch at the piano, with Steve Doyle and his bass rounding out our Symphony Orchestra!

Then, Altar Boyz' Ryan Duncan will discuss his upcoming return to the show and his recent visit to The A-Train Plays! You'll also hear cuts from new recordings by John Pizzarelli, Jeff Harnar, Brian Lane Green and Philip Chaffin!
