Jeff Blumenkrantz (and Songbook!)

September 23, 2005

Monday's Johnny Rodgers concert was one of the most musically satisfying we've presented at Birdland! The throngs showed up to celebrate Johnny, his band and their brand new CD, “Box Of Photographs.” We were happy to spy Brent Barrett in the crowd, who just got back from Seattle where he was starring in the Broadway-bound production of David Zippel's Princesses. Yeah…he's a Johnny fan, too! The following Cast Party was funny and fun as usual, with a surprise appearance by composer Jeff Blumenkrantz (above), who was doing a little celebrating of his own! His songbook was just released, and is available where all really good music is sold!

Coming up...

Capathia Jenkins and Louis RosenYou won't want to miss the ultra-amazing Capathia Jenkins and Louis Rosen (right) in concert this coming Monday at 7pm. They're coming to Birdland to perform jazz and the blues, and to reprise 12 Songs on Poems by Maya Angelou, which enjoyed sold-out performances when it premiered this past March. The concert will also include songs from Dream Suite, set to the words of Langston Hughes; and new songs from Mr. Rosen's cycle-in-progress, South Side Stories. You probably know Capathia from her Broadway and Los Angeles performance as The Washing Machine in Caroline Or Change, or maybe The Civil War, The Look Of Love or Godspell. Composer/lyricist Louis Rosen is a recipient of a 2005-2006 Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in Music Composition. This will be an extremely special show which will sell out for sure, so call Birdland NOW to reserve seats! (212.581.3080) Of course, Cast Party will follow, with Tedd Firth and Steve Doyle making up our Symphony Orchestra!

And another thing…! The Songbook Project, Phil Geoffrey Bond and I are pleased to bring you Trunk Songs, featuring three treasures of the American Musical Theatre: the afore-mentioned Jeff Blumenkrantz (Urban Cowboy), Craig Carnelia (Sweet Smell of Success) and Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party). During this one-night-only special concert, each composer will present some lesser-known works along with some of their best-loved compositions. The concert will be held on Saturday, September 24 at 8pm at The Duplex Cabaret Theatre (61 Christopher Street), and is part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF).
