Oh
Natalie!
Ms. Douglas really outdid herself in her fourth Monday night concert
at Birdland! The place was jammed with fans, including
Michael Feinstein (left, photo by Mark
Rupp), who led the final standing ovation. The band and backup
singers all sounded sublime, with many thanks to musical director Mark
Hartman, who came to town direct from his Pippin-conducting
duties at Goodspeed Opera House. We're so proud that
Natalie has made Birdland her home...and I'm so lucky that it's the
home of the Broadway Concert Series and Cast
Party. As the New York Times said,
“Birdland is the ultimate music room in the city...maybe
the world!” Speaking of...the following Cast
Party was amazing. Tedd Firth and Steve
Doyle, on piano and bass, were brilliant as always...accompanying
singers they've never heard as if they'd been rehearsing for weeks!
Impromptu performances by folks like Terri White, Michael
Winther, Lodi Carr, Stephanie Clark
and Jamie DeRoy made the evening fly by, as usual.
Next week...join us when Billy Stritch and Mr. Doyle
make up the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra. Do I even
need to repeat the fact that you just never know who will drop in? Check
out FLICKR
if you don't believe me! We love our photos, you know!

| Award-winning
songwriters Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich
(left) will once again bring the intimate The
Marcy & Zina Show to Birdland
this coming August 28 at 7:00 p.m. The show will feature
the duo's best-loved songs written for theater and cabaret, and also
introduce new songs from upcoming productions of Ever After
and Love Has Strings. They will be joined
by singers Kate Weatherhead and Scott Coulter,
cellist Peter Sachon, as well as Mike Croiter
on drums, Chris Sung on guitar and Matt Scharfglass
on bass. In case you don't know, Goldrich and Heisler have toured both
nationally and internationally performing their music at some of the
world's most prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall,
Canada's "Juste Pour Rire" comedy festival
and the Kennedy Center. Their song, "Taylor,
the Latte Boy" has been recorded by Christiane
Noll and Susan Egan, and is featured on Kristin
Chenoweth's CD on the Sony label. Their body
of work has garnered many honors including 4 MAC Awards,
2 Bistro Awards, and several grants for their musical
theatre projects. Their 32-song folio, Goldrich and Heisler
Vol.1, was published last year and is already in its second
printing. In 2004, they authored Junie B. Jones
for Theatreworks USA, which enjoyed a six-week
run at the Lucille Lortel Theatre as part of New York's
Free Summer Theatre Program and is currently touring
the country. Tickets are $25 with a $10 food/drink minimum. Call Birdland

| WHEN
TELARC RECORDS CALLED BILL WESTMORELAND to photograph Tony DeSare
for his upcoming CD,
to be released in 2007, Bill jumped at the chance to photograph Tony
in the recording studio. “It was probably the hottest day of the
year, the big heat wave of ’06, but I persevered and took my equipment
up to Avatar Studios on 53rd street. Of course, once I got inside Tony
was as cool as a cucumber, as always, and not only did I get to photograph
him at a beautiful Steinway grand piano but I also got to hear his incredible
rendition of Prince’s “Kiss.” Just being a part of
the actual recording is going to make the CD cover shoot and the accompanying
music video even more exciting and creative.” You can see more
about Tony DeSare at TonyDeSare.com.

| WHAT
DO MICHAEL C. HALL,
KERRY BUTLER, CHEYENNE JACKSON, ESTELLE PARSONS, JULIA MURNEY, DEVEN
MAY, HUNTER FOSTER, MICHAEL ARDEN, JAMES BLUNT and the GOO GOO DOLLS
all have in common? Their
secret weapon -- voice teacher Liz Caplan! Her student ANA GASTEYER
(upcoming Threepenny Opera) says, “Studying with Liz has changed my
approach to singing on every level. In the two years we have worked
together, she has combined phenomenal technique with tailor-made specifications
to meet a huge variety of professional demands. Her tireless enthusiasm
and expertise have empowered me physiologically and emotionally to become
a better singer than I had ever imagined. It's like physical therapy
and good, old-fashioned psycho-therapy for your vocal chords!” Visit

| "The
Party simply glows with New York nightlife ambiance. It feels like a
throwback to another era but it has this era's top-notch entertainers
dropping in to schmooze, sing, eat, and drink. Caruso
consistently provides a flow of exciting singers, and he's definitely
hip, cool and classy all by himself."
