Welcome
to our brand-new department, the Question of the Week!
You may have been watching Jim's video column on Theatermania.com,
Jim
Caruso is...Prying!, wherein Jim asks various glitterati
personal questions. If you haven't seen it yet, catch up with the archive,
here!
We thought it might be fun to ask you some of the same questions. We'll
query you right here in the newsletter and post all of your brilliant
answers in Jim's Guestbook, here.
Be ready, though -- Jim might decide to read particularly vivacious
messages out loud in front of everybody at the Cast Party. (Is that
a promise, or an threat? You decide.)
And so, without further adieu, we ask you:
Performing-types: what was your most embarrassing moment on
stage, like, evah?
Spill it -- here!

July

Patrick
DeGennaro's
Burt Bacharach show on Monday had Birdland
hopping! The place was packed, the music was brilliant, and Patrick
has never sounded better. I sometimes forget that Burt wrote some really
groovy tunes like “What's New Pussycat?,”
which Patrick sang in his best Tom
Jones hip-swinging manner. Afterwards, we were all gobsmacked
at how many first-time performers showed up for Cast Party. Of course,
there were some beloved regulars, like the totally glammed-out Hilary
Kole (left), who packed 'em in during her run
last week. The girl can sing. The New York Times
said so! I was also happy to see the way cool Lascivious
Biddies, who will be in concert at Birdland on September
18! Legendary Oscar-winning superstar Celeste
Holm and her husband, Frank Basile, stopped
in, and Frank favored us with a tune. So did Malan
Breton from TV's “Project Runway.”
Hilarious. Do I even need to say you never know WHO will show up at
Cast Party?! (Check out FLICKR
for proof!) The music went on until 1:30am, with spectacular help from
Tedd Firth and Steve
Doyle on piano and bass.

| They're
ba-a-ack! Toxic Audio (left), the best acapella
goup on the planet, will be in concert at Birdland on Monday,
August 7th at 7pm. Thanks to their Off-Broadway
run, a Drama Desk Award, and a 2005 Artist
of the Year honor by the CARA Awards, Toxic
Audio has definitely made their mark on the New York scene.
Since they were on our stage last year, they've performed all over the
world, including a Japanese tour, a smash run in Las Vegas, at Shea
Stadium, and for Robert De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival.
The five vocalists in Toxic Audio use no instruments other than the
human voice to create complex sonic textures, rhythmic drumbeats, thumping
bass lines and searing guitar-like solos in their performance of contemporary
pop songs, timeless classics, jazz-scat and vocally-orchestrated original
compositions. You have to hear them to believe them... so call 212.581.3080
or click on www.instantseats.com/birdland
now to reserve! Coming soon to our Summer In The City
concert series: Broadway's Nancy Anderson (August 14),
diva Natalie Douglas (August 21) and the fabulous Marcy
& Zina Show (August 28)!
A big shout-out to the cast and creators of [title
of show], one of the most hilarious, touching pieces
of theater I've seen in eons. Jeff Bowen, Hunter
Bell, Heidi Blickenstaff, Susan Blackwell,
Larry Pressgrove and Michael Berresse
have put together a musical about putting together a musical. You have
to see it! Run. Now. Really. Go.

| WHEN
BILL WESTMORELAND WAS CALLED TO PHOTOGRAPH WYNTON MARSALIS, the
voice on the other end of the line was Lisa Schiff, who is currently
the Chairman of the board of directors of Jazz at Lincoln
Center. "Lisa was producing SIGNATURE,
Ann Hampton Callaway's CD which was released in 2002.
She called me and said that Wynton would be recording the next day for
Ann's CD and asked if I would be available to photograph him. Of course
I jumped at that and the next day I went down early to the studio and
set up lights before he arrived. I was in the control room shooting
Wynton through the glass while he was doing the actual recording. It
was a magnificent experience--hearing him play, knowing that it was
the actual recording and photographing him all at the same time. Lucky
me!" Wynton Marsalis is the music director of Jazz
at Lincoln Center. Bill Westmoreland can be reached at

| WHAT
DO MICHAEL C. HALL,
KERRY BUTLER, CHEYENNE JACKSON, ESTELLE PARSONS, JULIA MURNEY, DEVEN
MAY, HUNTER FOSTER, MICHAEL ARDEN, JAMES BLUNT and the GOO GOO DOLLS
all have in common? Their
secret weapon -- voice teacher Liz Caplan! Her student ANA GASTEYER
(upcoming Threepenny Opera) says, “Studying with Liz has changed my
approach to singing on every level. In the two years we have worked
together, she has combined phenomenal technique with tailor-made specifications
to meet a huge variety of professional demands. Her tireless enthusiasm
and expertise have empowered me physiologically and emotionally to become
a better singer than I had ever imagined. It's like physical therapy
and good, old-fashioned psycho-therapy for your vocal chords!” Visit
http://www.LizCaplan.com
for more information, but tell Liz you heard about her at Cast Party!

| "The
Party simply glows with New York nightlife ambiance. It feels like a
throwback to another era but it has this era's top-notch entertainers
dropping in to schmooze, sing, eat, and drink. Caruso
consistently provides a flow of exciting singers, and he's definitely
hip, cool and classy all by himself."
