Last week...

Chita Rivera, Lucie Arnaz and Valarie Pettiford

May 27, 2005

Monday has become, as you are probably well aware, the new Saturday. There are literally dozens of events to choose from on Dark Day In Theater-Land. That’s why I was stunned and thrilled to see so many swells coming through the Birdland doors this past week at Cast Party! Chita Rivera and her fabulous family grabbed the biggest table in the joint, with Chita regaling everyone with her Jerry Lewis impression. ("Hey, Lay-deeeeee…" ) West Coast uber-musical director Ron Abel brought the spectacular Lucie Arnaz and Fosse star Valarie Pettiford (above, with Chita), and all three performed in their own dazzling ways! Eric Millegan, who’s TV pilot, "Bones," was just picked up, crooned, newcomer Sachal Vasandari showed us how to swing, the amazing Jimmy James served up some Bette Davis and Judy Garland, and cabaret divo John Wallowitch sang his signature "Bruce." Even Joyce Randolph, who played Trixie on "The Honeymooners," was there, enjoying the proceedings! Once again, a truly eclectic night! Before the Party, Stephanie D’Abruzzo’s 7pm concert was filled with family, friends and Avenue Q fans, all cheering her very first nightclub outing! The show was a smash, and our camera caught Stephanie celebrating with Q co-composer Jeff Marx and Bob McGrath from "Sesame Street!" (below)

Coming up...

Jeff Marx, Stephanie D'Abruzzo and Bob McGrathThis year, we want you to spend Memorial Day with the hippest a cappella group on the planet! Yes, Toxic Audio (see photo below) will be performing a very special one-night-only concert at Birdland on Monday, May 30th at 7pm. Rated #1 in the Wall Street Journal/Zagat Theater Survey, Toxic Audio showcased their unique vocal, comedic and improvisational skills at the John Houseman Theater in an Award-winning Off-Broadway run last year. Within the first two months, the show had won the 2004 Drama Desk Award for "Outstanding Unique Theatrical Experience." They have since performed as special guests at Gracie Mansion, for the New York Mets at Shea Stadium, the Tribeca Film Festival, and the Actor's Fund concert of Hair. The Birdland concert celebrates the release of their new cd on the DRG label, entitled "Word Of Mouth." Please call the club now to make reservations…212.581.3080. Then, stick around for Cast Party! Billy Stritch and Steve Doyle will make up the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra and we want to see YOU there!
