My
plans to enjoy a dazzling Monday night went extremely south with the advent
of the most unpleasant influenza. Happily, Christine Pedi's
show was a resounding success, what with folks like Margaret “Queen
of the American Songbook” Whiting in the house enjoying
the hilarity. Brava La Pedi! Later on, David Ippolito,
Billy Stritch and Steve Doyle kicked
major open-mic tuchas and hosted Cast Party
with aplomb. They even pulled a Larry King and interviewed
me by phone from my deathbed. I'm sure the audience, which included Broadway's
Brent Barrett and “Trading Spaces”
Demon Douglas Wilson, all enjoyed hearing me wheeze and
hack out my haunting Cher impression. Anything for a laugh, clearly! I
was able to become vertical the next night for Jason Robert Brown's
extravaganza, which jammed Birdland with family, friends
and showfolk like Justin Bohon, Kerry Butler,
Julie Garnye, Brian Nash, Mark
Hartman and superstar arranger Don Sebesky.
Check the picture above to see Jason with fans from the Manhattan
School of Music, or click on BroadwayWorld.com
to see Craig Brockman's wonderful photos of the evening.
It was great to see and hear the amazing Jenn Colella
guesting with Jason. She's just back from California where she knocked
'em dead in The Times They Are A-Changin', which
is coming to the Great White next season!

He's selling fast so
you better call Birdland now! Billy Stritch
hasn't done a solo show in New York City for over three years, so folks
are rarin' to see his Tribute to Mel Torme
this coming Monday, April 10 at 7pm. The show will
cover Tormé's entire career - from his own early compositions
("Born to Be Blue," "A Stranger
in Town") as well his arrangements of Rodgers
and Hart classics ("Mountain Greenery,"
"Blue Moon"), Cole Porter
("Just One of Those Things") and the Gershwins
("Isn't It Romantic?"). Mr. Stritch will
be joined onstage by David Finck on bass and Mike
Berkowitz on drums. Call the club at 212.581.3080
or just click on www.instantseats.com/birdland
and order away!
Right after Billy's show, stick around for Cast Party
with Tedd Firth at the piano, and Wayne Batchelor
on bass. Bring your charts, your fire batons and your balloon animals...we're
gonna put on a SHOW!
The following Monday, April 17, it's Simply
Barbra! I'm trilled and delighted that world-renowned
Streisand impersonator Steven Brinberg has returned
from a symphonic tour with Marvin Hamlisch to celebrate
the ultimate Diva's birthday with signature songs and special guests
from the Broadway stage. These ain't any old tired chorus boys, mind
you. Simply Barbra insisted on the best! Jersey
Boys' Daniel Reichard, Light
in the Piazza's David Burnham and Grey
Gardens' Matt Cavennaugh will be singing,
swinging and flinging Babs into a state of buttah all night, and you
SIMPLY must be there! Call Birdland, dontcha know? 212.581.3080.

"The Party simply glows
with New York nightlife ambiance. It feels like a throwback to another
era but it has this era's top-notch entertainers dropping in to schmooze,

What
do MICHAEL C. HALL, KERRY BUTLER, CHEYENNE JACKSON, ESTELLE PARSONS,
JULIA MURNEY, DEVEN MAY, HUNTER FOSTER, MICHAEL ARDEN, JAMES BLUNT and
the GOO GOO DOLLS all have in common? Their
secret weapon -- voice teacher Liz Caplan! Her student ANA GASTEYER (upcoming
Threepenny Opera) says, “Studying with Liz has changed my approach to
singing on every level. In the two years we have worked together, she
has combined phenomenal technique with tailor-made specifications to meet
a huge variety of professional demands. Her tireless enthusiasm and expertise
have empowered me physiologically and emotionally to become a better singer
than I had ever imagined. It's like physical therapy and good, old-fashioned
psycho-therapy for your vocal chords!” Visit www.LizCaplan.com
for more information, but tell Liz you heard about her at Cast Party!
